The Energy Transition Skills Hub at Pembrokeshire College is one of three Skills Hub's being set up in the UK and the only one with a State of the Art Control Room Simulation Suite, with advanced simulation software to Train Learners on a variety of Processes from existing Hydrocarbon Technologies, Power Generation to the New Renewable Energy Industries, from Offshore Floating Wind, Solar, Hydrogen & Battery Power Generation.. My role has been to support the project Team as Technical advisor, assisting with writing the Technical specifications for the tender of the simulation software and then once the tender was awarded testing the software to ensure it had the required specification and Functionality, helping to train fellow staff members along with assisting development of lesson plans that run in conjunction with the City & Guilds Accredited Award programme. I am now combining my existing role with assisting in Tutoring and delivery of our foundation course material, sharing my knowledge and experience with Learners helping them visualise a potential future career in Process Operations in both the existing Energy Sectors and the Emerging Renewable Energy sectors.

The Jazan Refinery is a Grassroots project to construct, commission and Operate a 400,000-bpd complex Refinery and Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Power Plant. As a Supervisor within the Crude & Vacuum Distillation Operations start up team, we are liaising with the Construction Contractor to developing the Operations Instruction Manual, Commissioning Procedures and start up execution plan.Assisting with all aspects of forming an operations team, drawing up equipment lists, operator check lists, safety equipment location along with checking operability and access to plant and equipment. ensuring any issues are highlighted to the contractor through the project management team, an evolving situation that will see myself and the team take ownership and control of the unit as we move forward towards start up.Supporting and improving team performance by sharing knowledge and best practices. Implementing and supporting effective working practices and systems as required to continuously improve product delivery. Working collaboratively with management teams and maintaining a positive working relationship with the client’s and any sub-contractors. Completing all activities in a timely accurate and efficient manner in accordance with procedures and work instructions. Working flexibly to accommodate the changing needs of the business; working long hours and taking on additional responsibility. Excellent communication skills at all levels while remaining dedicated to ensuring understanding of company requirements and procedures. Responding promptly and effectively to changing circumstances, planning for contingencies and managing conflicting priorities. Ensuring each unit is operated safely.Maintaining product specifications, keeping each unit optimised to achieve maximum efficiency.Assisting the Shift Supervisor with running the shift, preparation of equipment for maintenance, permit to work preparation and issue.Carrying out Risk Assessments and Hazops.Assisting the panel controller with plant performance, set-up and the training of new operators. Operating as part of a small team who were responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Power Station. Primary role was as Control Room Engineer, in overall charge of the operation of the Power Station.Leading a three-man shift team while operating the plant safely and efficiently via Bailey DCS.Responding effectively to trips and emergencies and to be commercially aware of system gas and electricity prices, and if required trade those commodities in their respective markets. Control room duties required me to qualify as a Senior Authorised Person (SAP) for permit preparation and issue, gaining authorisation to isolate both 415v and 6.6kv switchgear. Carrying out routine checking of running plant.Gas nominations for day ahead gas supply, assisting the Control Room Technician in plant set up and performance, and the routine testing of safety systems and equipment.

Operating as a member of the “Genesis Expansion” start-up team, responsible for the commissioning and running of nine process units including the Chlorosilane Distillation Unit, Fluidised Bed Reactor, Heat Transfer Unit, Plant Vents Incinerator, Waste Heat Boilers and Silica Grinding Unit. Gaining experience in all aspects of commissioning large process units from construction to the introduction of unit feed, along with Control Systems Commissioning.Working alongside systems engineers to test and start up the Foxborough Distributed Control Systems. Promoted to Lead Operator, leading a team of five Plant Operators, overseeing safe plant operation, equipment preparation, permit issue, Operator Training and contractor supervision.Fully trained in chemical leak isolation techniques, fire-fighting and first aid, also became a qualified forklift truck driver.

Operating as part of a shift team covering one half of the Refinery units, these comprised the Refineries Crude and Vacuum Distillation Units along with the utilities area of plant which include the Cogeneration unit, water treatment, boiler feed water and Cooling water systems along with Refinery Flare and Sulphur recovery units. Experience was gained in the Start-Up and Shutdown procedures of large process units in addition to actions required during plant upset or trip conditions. Additional experience was gained in commissioning new plant during start-up of the Refineries Sulphur Recovery Unit. Later taking on the role of Operations co-ordinator during a maintenance shutdown of the Sulphur plant, also assisting with the co-ordination of maintenance activities on the Refineries Cogen Plant, supervising contractors involved in servicing the unit’s gas turbines and waste heat boilers then assisting in testing and re-commissioning these units once servicing complete. Trained to competency in control room operations for the above units using Honeywell TDC 3000 control systems. Additional duties included understanding and if necessary carrying out emergency procedures, fire fighting, use of breathing Apparatus and first aid response.
