    When I started with Auto Trader Magazine (our corporate name was Trader Publishing) there were fewer than 15 branch offices. When I left in 1996 we had 85. In that same time period the company grew from $30M to over $300M. The revenue growth expectations were 20% annually with income growth budgeted to be 15% annually.It was a very exciting time. I had an oustanding boss who became my mentor. His name was Bill Rieth. I was fortunate to be a part of something very special. Our culture was totally performance driven. No politics, no bull.My first opportunity was to take over a brand new start up in Kansas City. In 1993 I was asked by Bill Rieth to take over the office in West Michigan. This property that included Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Lansing had been struggling financially. I took it over and with a great team turned the results around in less than 2 years. From there I went to West Palm Beach, Floridain 1995. We had just acquired our major competitor. My assignment was to succesfully merge the two teams and find new facilities for the combined office. I completed this assignment in 12 months. I left a great company because of what I despised the most...politics. I moved back to Louisville, Kentucky to start over. It was hard, but it turned out to be the best move I made. I am grateful to Bill Rieth for being a great mentor, but I have never looked back.

    After 2 very successful years as a Sales Rep for Curtis I was promoted to District Marketing Manager. I was responsible for 15 sales people in 4 states. Looking back it was an awesome job. I was 26 years old, the youngest of 25 Sales Managers in the nation. Eevryone on my team was older than I was. Here I learned the value of teaching others how to work hard and how to sell. Sales improved slowly. Turnover was high. Company wide it was over 100%.Norm Shatz was my mentor and later George Grizzard. I travelled 75% of the time and with a young family it was difficult. I resigned to be home with my wife and young son.
