In my 40+ year practice as an advocate, I represented management in traditional labor relations matters, including collective bargaining negotiations, grievances and arbitrations, union campaigns and matters before the National Labor Relations Board. I also represented public and private employers in employment litigation and human resources counseling, including matters involving wage & hour, occupational safety and health, age, sex, race and disability discrimination and affirmative action before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration and similar state agencies. I also represented school districts in personnel and school law matters. As a trial lawyer, I represented employers in courts, before administrative agencies and in arbitration throughout the United States.I joined Spencer Fane Britt & Browne LLP in 1976, after graduating from the University of Kansas School of Law and spent my entire legal career practicing as a member of the firm's Labor & Employment Law Group. I served three terms as practice group leader and two terms on the firm's executive committee.After retiring (mostly) from my practice as an advocate, I spent the next ten years teaching law students at my alma mater labor law and collective bargaining and serving as a mediator in employment and wage & hour matters.Since moving with my wife, Kathy, to Lawrence, Kansas in 2014, I have become active in the local historic preservation community. I have served on the boards of the Lawrence Preservation Alliance (President, 2022-present), Douglas County Historical Society/ Watkins Museum of History (President 2020-21, Treasurer, 2022-2023), Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council (Chair, 2020-21), Kansas Preservation Alliance and Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area.
