About Mike Flick

It began when I was young. I tested my vocal cords with loud incessant crying. Thankfully I was born right before Christmas and the calming walks my parents gave me included a trip past the cookie tray. Once essential verbal skills were acquired, I transferred most of the crying effort into talking. This continued through my schooling, punctuated during each parent-teacher conference with the reminder that I needed to work on my diarrhea of the mouth during school hours. Somehow, this motor mouth landed in one of the most socially awkward industries around. I grew up with dirt on my hands and building on my mind. Hour long Tonka truck sessions constructing who-knows-what in the sandbox were followed by impromptu dam construction in the gutters during rain storms. I loved construction equipment and I longed to drive a scraper.(I still do). No toy will ever be as special to me as my Legos. The floor of my bedroom was permanently littered with the little bright bricks, fastened together in whatever shape my brain imagined that day. These puzzle pieces all lead to where I sit today - a professional civil engineer working on transportation projects across Colorado. I still talk all the time. I still enjoy getting my hands dirty. I love building things. And I still love to play with Tonka trucks and Legos.

Sometimes you just KNOW something. And I KNEW that being a detailed roadway modeler was not my strength. I would not say that the models I developed in the early stages of my career were bad - they just lacked a level of detail that even decent modelers can provide. My path was not that direction and I KNEW it. I latched onto various project managers who gave me the opportunity to lead design teams or be a deputy project manager. After they all vanished from HDR or stopped letting me tag along (who was the common denominator there?), I defaulted into managing my own projects. Now, I dabble in whatever projects or programs are in need of my assistance: design-build projects, program management, standard design-bid-build projects, herding summer interns, mentoring younger staff, marketing/proposal work. Just don't ask me to model a roadway, please...
  • F/Hdr Global Design Consultants
Gold Line And Northwest Electrified Segment Corridor Manager
    F/Hdr Global Design Consultants Jan 2012 - Jan 2014
My life on this project began simply - as a civil designer on the Gold Line corridor. Fortunately for my career (and unfortunately for my blood pressure), that simple life disappeared as quickly as it came. Immediately, opportunities sprouted like dandelions in my front yard. From that point forward, my role has migrated, morphed, and expanded to include managing survey and ROW efforts, coordinating work with sub-consultants, corralling all the design variances (all 400 of them), QC'ing millions of sheets (conservative estimate), and eventually moving into management of the Gold Line and NWES corridors. Also I didn't sleep.

  • Ground Engineering Consultants

Ground Engineering Consultants May 2001 - Jan 2004
Performed geotechnical testing both in the laboratory and at the project sites.
