About Michael Flynn

I am a fast, independent learner with a passion for tackling new domains of expertise both independently and through collaboration with other experts, tinkering and solving multi-disciplinary technical problems, and aligning team members around the pursuit of a common goal in the face of difficult outlooks.I received my B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemical engineering simultaneously from Drexel University in June 2019.I was a founder and principal engineer at Sonnest Inc., where I worked with a technical team of 1-5 people, in addition to our C-suite and external partners, to take a complex injectable ultrasound enhancing agent product, Electrast, from an early stage (R&D lab manufacturing scale and preclinical proof of principle) through execution of a first-in-human trial and beyond. This experience was the most demanding trial of my stress and risk tolerance, research and mentorship capabilities, and persistence and resolve that I have faced so far in my young career. It has left me appreciative of the value of persistence, foresight and long-term vision, giving and receiving honest feedback, the balance between time, capital, and likelihood of success, and the equal and finite time we each individually must choose how to spend each day and each lifetime. Before Sonnest, I completed three six-month co-op experiences through Drexel University: the first as a member of the R&D team at Infineum USA, a leader in the lubricant additive industry, and the second and third as a member of the analytical team at W. L. Gore and Associates, a leader in advanced materials. At Infineum, I contributed to a diverse series of projects in product development and modeling, expanding my knowledge of advanced numerical kinetic modeling and programming, polymerization theory, and analytical techniques. At W. L. Gore and Associates, I created tailored software to automate analytical team workloads and multiply efficiency, devised new spectroscopic techniques and statistical processing methods to advise manufacturing teams, implemented a dynamic database of analytical lab samples and work history using Python, and led the install quality process for multiple analytical devices.I spent my freshman (only) summer off as a full-time laboratory researcher in the Tang Electrochemistry Lab growing my scientific independence while designing and directing experiments, investigating the electrochemistry of sodium-ion electrolyte solutions, and engineering new data processing methods for characterizing experimental electrolyte solutions.

  • Drexel University
    Masters Candidate
    Drexel University Sep 2017 - Jun 2019
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Us
The Wrenn Biological Colloids lab applies principles of colloid science to the study of human diseases. I contributed to this mission by creating tailored applications which interface with electronics such as signal generators, ultrasound transducers/hydrophones, RF amplifiers, and oscilloscopes for the measurement of ultrasound attenuation and scattering by colloidal structures. I have come to call this complex system of instruments an "ultrasound spectrometer" due to its fundamental mathematical similarity to other analytical spectroscopic scattering and absorbance methods such as Raman scattering, or FTIR or UV/Vis absorbance. My development of a software suite which automates long, intricate experiments and interfaces with the ultrasound spectrometer continues to enable PhD candidates and I to rapidly study how changes in colloidal formulation, ultrasound frequency and pressure, electric field, and dissolved oxygen impact our colloidal structures's ultrasonic oscillatory behavior.
  • W. L. Gore & Associates
    Analytical Imaging Technologist Co-Op
    W. L. Gore & Associates Apr 2018 - Sep 2018
    Newark, Delaware, Us
In my second co-op experience with W. L. Gore and Associates, I decided to move within the Core Technology Analytical team from my previous role specializing in spectroscopy to a mixed software and product development role. In my product development work, I determined the process window for a key step in an IP-sensitive exploratory research project by driving process and formulation understanding. In my software development work, I quickly recreated a pre-existing MATLAB script in Python, then vastly expanded its capabilities and features. The program was used to generate precisely defined 3-D material structures for the evaluation of a filtration simulations package. Separately from this structure generation software, I used Python to enable project engineering teams by partnering with them to create novel 3-D image analysis tools for analyzing Gore products in their application settings. In all of these projects, I seized the opportunity to communicate experimental results to specialized internal technical communities in stand-alone talks.
  • W. L. Gore & Associates
    Analytical Chemist Co-Op
    W. L. Gore & Associates Apr 2017 - Sep 2017
At W. L. Gore and Associates, I learned a wide range of new skills from masterful mentors. My understanding and execution of analytical methods such as FTIR, NMR, and Raman spectroscopy were sharpened. I developed test methods to quantify the reliability of new analytical instruments. I grew my confidence in my ability to collaborate with engineers and R&D scientists and provide them with my interpretations, recommendations, and conclusions. I solved senior technologists' repetitive or infeasible workloads with easy-to-use tailored software in Excel VBA and Python which multiplied to the analytical team’s daily efficiency and gave them new capabilities entirely. I found that there is room in hard science for creativity as I invented new ways to process and present spectroscopic data to better communicate my conclusions to other engineers. I was able to expand my horizons by taking charge of the installation and certification process of a new analytical device and leading a volunteer event at a regional animal rescue with dozens of other associates.
  • Infineum
    Enabling Research Co-Op
    Infineum Mar 2016 - Sep 2016
    Abingdon, Oxfordshire, Gb
During my time on the Enabling Research team at Infineum USA, I learned that I enjoy investigating engineering problems to the point of pondering it outside of work hours. I worked on two main categories of projects: polymerization modeling and product improvement.I learned to use Siemens gPROMS (PSE gPROMS back then), a proprietary non-linear equation system solver with applications in chemical engineering simulations. Using Siemens gPROMS, I brought new dimensions to a preexisting simple theoretical model of a proprietary polymerization reaction, enabling senior technologists' polymerization kinetics theories to be implemented in simulations and compared with real kinetic data from a pilot scale reactor. I learned to automate data analysis of ASPEN records and in-situ IR probe data from real chemical processes using Excel VBA.I performed lab-scale experimental copolymer syntheses in a pressurized reactor and analyzed the product to correlate synthesis parameters with product performance. In both of these projects, I learned to make effective, concise reports on my findings and to communicate them to my supervisors before contributing to choosing the projects' direction moving forward. In analyzing the experimental products, I learned to perform IR spectroscopy, NMR, and other, more industry-specific ASTM test methods.I am grateful to the Infineum team that hosted me during my six-month co-op, where I learned more about kinetic rate law theory, polymer thermodynamics, PID tuning, and parameter fitting than could be learned in a university setting.
  • Star Summer Research Program
    Research Scientist
Star Summer Research Program Jun 2015 - Aug 2015
As a researcher in Dr. Tang's lab, I quickly overcame the knowledge barrier that existed between a freshman engineer and a contributing laboratory team member. My first project was to develop a repeatable and consistent process for evaluating various organic solvents for possible sodium-ion batteries. After I established a process, I began researching the electrochemical behavior of the various solvents and I developed a new data processing technique using MATLAB and Excel for evaluating their performance. The entire summer culminated in a poster explaining my data processing and experiment design.
  • Drexel Nanophotonics+ Laboratory
    Equipment Designer And Web Developer
    Drexel Nanophotonics+ Laboratory Mar 2015 - Jun 2015
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Us
A team of three freshman engineers, (Nicholas Bromhead, Michael Barnes, and myself), joined forces with PhD candidate Alyssa Bellingham of the Nanophotonics+ Laboratory to develop an electroluminescent dip coating device in ten weeks as part of the freshman design laboratory course requirement at Drexel University. I directed 3D printing of custom parts and mathematical analysis that determined the specifications of the motor. I also designed a website, du2015-grp940-01.blogspot.com/, to document the team's progress. We had fun operating as a small team free to execute on our intuitions to address an academic lab's need.
