Responsible for designing and specifying a new coating chamber for Gentex to execute the production a special coating design for Laser Eye Protection (LEP). The new chamber is equipped with E-beam, resistance sources, plasma source, planetary drive, diffusion pumps, full computer control, etc. Developed processes in the new chamber coatings to produce special LEP on polycarbonate substrates.

Responsible for designing and specifying a new coating chamber for RC to execute the production a special coating design in the MWIR. The new chamber is equipped with E-beam, resistance sources, IAD, planetary drive, cryopumps, full computer control, etc. Developed processes in the new chamber that both duplicate the visible coatings produced in another RC chamber, and the advanced designs for the MWIR special coating.

Responsible for the technical development of advanced deposition processes and coating capability for large area depositions like the Kepler primary mirror and other large space optics. Designed and built up the chamber for manufacturing Band Pass coatings used in the SOC hyper-spectral camera system. In addition: Worked with customers, wrote SBIR proposals, PI on several SBIR contracts, trained engineers and technicians, wrote papers and presented at conferences. In addition, designed and produced band pass and beam splitter coatings that are critical elements in the production of SOC advanced hyper-spectal camera systems.

Owned and operated the optical coating consulting firm (IBO).• Developed UV blocking coating for Entech lenses used in space power concentrator arrays. Produced high thermal emissivity coatings for AFRL thin-film solar cells.• Phase I and Phase II SBIR program for AFRL - developed radiation resistant solar cell cover coatings. Designed coatings for laser eye protection and solar energy development programs for military and commercial applications.• Provided advanced design and process consultations for Thin Film Technology, Surface Optics Corp., and Research Electro Optics.• Developed the concept for depositing coatings on large area optics in space. Teamed with LBNL on proposing the technology for depositing coatings in space for future lunar missions, including astronomical observations and for the generation of solar power.• Invited speaker at conferences and have served on technical sessions for OIC and SPIE.

Principle investigator on: the narrow band pass development program, wedge and stripe filter programs for NASA and JHU, Compass filter program, and others. Responsible for supporting programs for Imaging, MEMS, Liquid Crystal Devices, Optical Materials and Devices, Micro-optics involving the application of advanced thin-film deposition technology.• Laser Eye Protection coating technology: Provided technical leadership for the ALEP (Aircrew Laser Eye Protection) program.• Program Manager for the Boeing commercial ALEP development program.• Program Manager: Boeing landing-light coating development program, Raytheon laser protection coating programs.• Designed and produced the complex coating for the hyper-spectral filter on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (CRISM module).

Responsible for the development and implementation of innovative technology for the production of thin- film optical coatings. Worked closely with customers to provide advanced coating solutions to meet their challenging requirements.• Developed the new High Output Ion-Assisted-Deposition (IAD) source for depositing advanced coatings on temperature-sensitive polymer substrates.• Program Manager and Design Engineer for the International Space Station Window coating project for NASA and Boeing.• Invented the new Filtered Cathodic Arc technology for producing the super-hard thin-film coatings at room temperature for applications in the commercial, military, and aerospace industry.

Responsible for upgrading Avimo’s thin-film optical coating technology in the manufacturing of precision optical components. Concentrated on the installation and process development of Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD) technology in the production of high performance optical fitters. Developed the first commercial contracts for Avimo from Europe (Zeiss, Hemzolt, Doctor Optics) for the production of high quality optical components.• Developed robust manufacturing process for the ANVIS (night vision) programs.• Established with the Singapore government a “Center of Thin-Film Excellence” at the Productivity Standards Board (PSB) facility that included other optics companies (II-VI; Leica; Plummer).• Established collaboration with Singapore’s Universities for the development of advanced coating technology, including Filter Cathodic Arc (FCA) and IAD.

Provided Thin-Film Optical Coating expertise for a variety of programs in Boeing.• Developed an Ion Assisted Deposition capability that rendered a superior optical film for a number of applications: Fiber Optical Interfaces, Optical Sensors, Optical Guided-wave Components, Advanced Electro-optical Components, Anti-reflection Coatings for world record Tandem Solar Cell, Gallium Arsenide Lasers, Wide Band LED's, and many others.• Consulted on a number of Boeing programs including: Space Station Freedom, Electro-propulsion for Space, Military Airplane programs, the Boeing 777 commercial airplane. With members of the Prototype Development Group led the invention of a thin-film protective coating for a Silicone Fresnel Lens.

Responsible for the design and production of a wide variety of "Hard Thin-Film Coatings" using IAD. Also, involved in the historically important "soft coating" technology which was advanced at PSI MAX Optics to produce Ultra Narrow Band Passes (10 Angstrom wide; and 1 Angstrom variation across a 9’ diameter substrate). Developed first hard oxide Band Pass coating system using IAD that became the Corning/OCA prototype system for Telecom DWDM filter production.

Process engineering management of IR product lines in the Advanced Products Division of Optical Coating Laboratory Inc. This included such programs as: Large Area coatings for Space and Terrestrial Applications, Solar Cell Covers for space power, FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) and Thermal Imaging Systems, Flight Simulator Windows, Far Infrared Band Pass and Long Wave and Short Wave Pass filters for space applications, including: GOES weather satellites, Space Shuttle windows, Jupiter mission Galileo, and space solar power.• The first person in the world to develop Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD) technology for production applications, using the end-Hall ion source.• Worked on several projects that involved developing High Energy Laser coatings for Lawrence Livermore Laboratory (LASER FUSION PROGRAM).
