Set up the office as war was ending. Strategic development and management oversight of humanitarian and civil society/governance programs, finance, compliance, security, new business development and external relations.

Myanmar was just hit by the devastating Cyclone Nargis two weeks before I arrived in May 2008 on the emergency team. We set up operations and provided urgent relief to thousands of families: emergency shelter, water and sanitation, and livelihoods recovery - giving fishing nets and boats to fishermen who lost it all during the cyclone, and to farmers we gave animals like water buffaloes, farming equipment and seeds so they could plow their fields again. I led the growth of our programming to include mangrove protection and recovery, environmental education, farmer training and livelihoods support, climate change adaptation, and civil society capacity development. I played a key role in helping the Food Security Working Group develop as a new organization, which provided useful opportunities for advocacy with the government. As Country Director, I built the program from the ground up, establishing it as one of the leading NGOs in the country.

Post-disaster emergency program management after the deadly South Asian earthquake and tsunami of 2004 and the Kashmir earthquake of 2005. I was based in Aceh, Indonesia where I led cash-for-work, community infrastructure rehabilitation and shelter reconstruction projects. Following that, I set up the office in Muzaffarabad, the epicenter of the Kashmir earthquake. Here, with funding from USAID, I hired and trained the team to provide water and sanitation to camps where the displaced families were living.

In 2001, fighting broke out between government forces and ethnic Albanians in Macedonia. I worked on a USAID-funded project, the Confidence Building Initiative, to support community-level efforts to build confidence in the peace process and reduce tensions between Macedonian, Albanian, Turkish and Roma communities. I set up the office in western Macedonia, recruited an excellent team of people committed to building a better country, and made a real impact at the community level with over 30 completed projects throughout the region.In Afghanistan, the project was very similar, but more focused on connecting isolated communities in Hazarajat (the Central Highlands) with their local government representatives for the participatory design and implementation of community infrastructure projects. Most of the communities were ethnic Hazaras, and some were Tajik. Overall we implemented over 30 community projects, impacting on the ability of these amazing people to better pursue their livelihoods.

When fighting started in Macedonia, tens of thousands of ethnic Albanian families fled to safety in neighboring Kosovo. One year before, Kosovar Albanians sought refuge in Albanian areas of Macedonia, and now they remembered the generosity they were shown there by opening up their humble homes to the refugees from Macedonia. I led a program that provided shelter assistance to these refugee families by giving the host families housing materials, stoves, and firewood to provide a warm, dry place for refugees in that difficult winter. I managed a team of engineers and social workers who visited the villages where refugees had arrived, assessed the needs, and delivered assistance as necessary.
