I've been a freelance illustrator for over 25 years, working with major national publishing houses on books and magazines in multiple markets.I've been a working artist for more then twice those years - painter, drawer, sculptor, installations, photography, and digital. While exhibiting nationally, I've been awarded numerous prestigious fellowships and grants. As an art teacher, I've taught the range - early Montessori through to college courses, after school inner-city programs, and art programs at nursing homes. I've learned a good deal along the way!

Freelance IllustratorMichael Gellatly Illustration 1994 - PresentWww.Mgellatlyillo.ComWorking as a freelance illustrator for 25+ years, I’m presently living and working in Northeast, NY. I’ve illustrated a countless number of books and magazines in both the General Reference/Instructional/Technical markets, and for Fiction/Nonfiction markets. I’ve illustrated maps for George R.R. Martin’s, World of Ice and Fire, published by Random House, 2014. Most recently, I completed a set of 10 illustrations for Rita Mae Brown, Random House. For the past 19 years I've had the great pleasure collaborating with her on her Sneaky Pie Brown murder mystery series, doing 10 B/W interior drawings each book. I have extensive experience with interior illustration for books and magazines, some notable cover illustrations and design, web work, portraits, and advertisement/promotional material. I work both by hand and digitally, independently or combined. The end result being a file(s) delivered on time, at a competitive but fair rate, and often, more then expected. For some time now, I've been working on my own book. It's a book about sandwiches, it's a book about sculpture; a book that if you miss lunch, there's always dessert. It's instructive, diagrammatical, anicdotal, in part historical, in part comical. It's lunch

ArtistMichaelgellatlyart 1952 - PresentWww.Mgellatlyart.ComI've exhibited regionally and nationally, receiving a National Endowment for the Arts Grant for Painting in 1985, the Pollock/Krasner Grant for Painting in 2000, state art grants from Connecticut and Florida, and have been awarded several artist residency fellowships at the Vermont Studio Center, and at the Millay Artist Colony. The work. To describe it, is to talk about an organism going through change.I'm a maker, and where it comes to the art practice, I touch every bit of it, while continuing to develop further iconography with every step taken. Risk is a companion. As an art teacher, I've written along the full length of the classroom wall - ‘In order to live in a new world, we must speak in a new language’. The world's in constant flux, and so the nature and rhythms in my art move in this developing model. The process is cyclical - moving organically from drawing to sculpture to oils to digital to photography to more drawing to watercolors to styrofoam to paint pen, back to drawing, always back to the drawing. For me, drawing asks the question, and in the end, answers. Working fluidly in this cyclical manner, I don't control the wheel, but I do ride it with tools in hand, at any contextual point and method of making.

Art TeacherMaplebrook School Mar 2023 - PresentAmenia, NyI believe that the student should not hesitate to analyze art, because the more one analyzes it, and learns about it, the more mysterious it becomes. The student must be encouraged to not fear in and out of the studio, but to courageously develop and nurture an unquenchable appetite for visual discovery and adventure. With passion as well with expertise, I’m committed to both my art and my teaching, expecting no less of myself in the class than I do of the student.Over the past 8 years living and working in Miami, I’ve been an art teacher at the Riviera Preparatory School, where I currently am employed, the same at the Palmer Trinity School, a substitute teacher for grades 6 -12, an exhibiting fine artist, and a published freelance illustrator. Being from northwestern Connecticut, I still very much consider it home, and my plan is to return back there permanently at the end of this school year.
