Michael Guthrie is the founding design principal of INFORM Studio, with offices in Detroit, Chicago and Traverse City. Michael’s accomplishments range from professional to academic; and his commitment to the firm’s progressive work is illustrated by a broad range of projects including community centers, higher education, libraries, urban mixed-use, housing, hospitality, urban design and pedestrian bridges.Michael has been an adjunct professor, thesis adviser, juror and lectured at numerous universities including the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania, North Carolina State, Clemson, Lawrence Technological University and the University of Illinois to name a few. He was honored to represent one of only 8 offices globally to present at the Grand Egyptian Museum Competition Symposium in Cairo, Egypt and was a sustainable design keynote speaker for the South China University of Technology in Guangzhou.His achievement of significant professional awards and distinctions are numerous, and include 44 AIA Design Awards and numerous projects achieving LEED certifications. Michael received the 2003 AIA Detroit Young Architect Award and was honored with the 2004 AIA Michigan Young Architect Award. His work has been published in Architecture, Architectural Record, Archiworld, CA Concept, Albenaa Magazine, and various other publications; and highlighted in numerous exhibitions in Detroit, Illinois, Denver, New York, and Cairo. Michael was the team leader for 11 distinctive competition entries receiving commendation including four winning projects that have been constructed or are in final design. In May 2011, INFORM studio was recognized as the AIA Michigan Firm of the Year, and Michael was elevated to the AIA College of Fellows in 2024.KDN films completed a 60 minute, PBS documentary film, "Up From Ashes", which chronicled the innovative sustainable design and construction process for the Ann Arbor District Library, Traverwood Branch, for which Michael served as the Principal in Charge of design.
