Physicist And Analytical Scientist
Postdoctoral Scholar
Working in Mike Gordon's lab, I have been designing and setting up experiments to study methane pyrolysis in molten metals with in-situ spectroscopy and various ex-situ characterization methods. This project is funded by the DOE's ARPA-E program. • Designed and set up experiments, such as in-situ spectroscopic (UV-Vis, IR) and visualization to study hydrocarbon pyrolysis in molten metal environments• Analyzed reaction products with LDI-MS, FTIR (DRIFTS, transmission, pellets), and Raman spectroscopy • Designed and fabricated reactor components• Set up RGA to sample gaseous reaction products in exhaust line• Wrote LabVIEW scripts for experimental control and data analysis• Set up Ti:Saph fs laser and maintained gas ion (Ar+, Kr+) lasers• Presented progress in quarterly reports to stakeholdersSoftware: Extensive use of LabVIEW, some design experience with Autodesk Inventor. Continued use of Mathematica, OriginLasers: Coherent Mira, Coherent Ar+ and Kr+ gas ion lasers, Spectra Physics Millennia. Various CW DPSS lasers.Hardware: Bruker FTIR, Horiba 550mm triple grating Spectrometer - both run on LabVIEW. SRS RGA 200. Various light sources, power supplies, DAQsFabrication: End Mill with rotary table, drill press, various small power and hand toolsPostdoc from January 1st, 2021 - November 16th, 2021.
Graduate Student Researcher
I work in the lab of Mattanjah de Vries studying the instrinsic photo-relaxation mechanisms of cold, isolated molecules using laser desorption jet cooling mass spectrometry. In this role, I have been responsible for overseeing a wide range of homebuilt and commercial instrumentation. This includes responsibility for repairs, maintenance, and new design. For a list of lasers maintained, see below. Coding and software experience includes Mathematica, Labview, Gaussian16/Gaussview6 (on UCSB's High Performance Computing cluster, Knot), Autodesk Inventor, and Python.• Studied the intrinsic photo-relaxation mechanisms of cold (10K) isolated molecules in a homebuilt instrument with laser spectroscopy• Repaired, maintained, and refined homebuilt high vacuum instrumentation• Repaired high power pulsed lasers including Nd:YAG, dye, ArF excimer, OPO/OPA, and OPG • Set up homebuilt Laser Lift Off setup for collaborators preparing micro-LEDs• Wrote analysis scripts in Mathematica to fit observed photophysics• Recruited and mentored undergraduate and new graduate student researchersLasers I have worked on:Ekspla PL2251 (ps Nd:YAG)2x Ekspla PG401 (tunable ps OPA, UV-NIR)Quanta Ray DCR-2A, GCR-2A (800 mJ/pulse 1064nm, ns Nd:YAG)Quanta Ray DCR-11 (270 mJ/pulse 1064nm, ns Nd:YAG)Lumonics HD300, HD500 (355/532nm pumped dye, tunable ns output, KD*P & BBO doubling crystals)LaserVision OPO:OPA (1064nm pumped, tunable ns IR)2x Continuum Minilite (~30 mJ/pulse 1064nm, small ns Nd:YAG)Gam EX5 193nm excimer (1-5 mJ/pulse, ns)Electronics & Troubleshooting equipment:Digital MultimeterOscilloscopes, Digitizer CardHigh vacuum leak detectorGPIB communication (National Instruments)Delay generators (Stanford Research Systems DG645, DG535)Delay stage (Thorlabs 300mm travel length)ArduinoVarious power supplies
Undergraduate Student Researcher
In the lab of Professor Mark J. Perri, I worked on method development for quantitative analysis using Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) coupled to GC-MS. This was applied in two projects. The first was to measure pesticide contamination in local waterways. The second project was to measure the mowing induced volatile organic chemicals from local lawns to estimate atmospheric VOC inputs from mowing grass.I presented my work at 3 poster sessions and a departmental seminar.
Summer Researcher
Funded by the National Science Foundation's Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), I performed research in the lab of Lewis J. Rothberg. Using ellipsometry and a novel interferometry technique, Brewster Angle Straddle Interferometry, I studied the feasibility of different surface chemistries for potential applications in biosensors. I presented my work at a poster session and a conference.
