Leading organizations through challenging business transformation is what I do with great passion. For me, the journey is deeply rewarding; it reflects my own journey from humble roots in Germany's rustbelt to where I am today. I have a track record in developing innovative business models and disruptive strategies, while attracting and nurturing high-performing executive teams. I began leading the transformation at Cengage Group in Fall 2012, initiating a successful Chapter 11 reorganization that helped pave the way for the company’s evolution from a struggling higher-ed print publisher, to now, a portfolio edtech company operating in attractive markets and delivering consistent mid-single-digit revenue and profitability growth. The company is now more than 70% digital, focused on providing ‘Education for Employment’ and helping individuals improve their lives through achieving tangible education outcomes.I strongly believe that company culture is a critical driver of business success and have worked diligently to foster an environment at Cengage Group where trust, transparency and collaboration are foundational. This philosophy and commitment were most exemplified during the COVID-19 pandemic when we instituted “First Fridays” – a routine live forum for employees to hear directly from me on a range of topics pertaining to our business, culture and industry, as well as provide them the opportunity to ask questions. This forum, which is routinely joined by more than a thousand employees live, has been cited by employees as a positive contributor to our culture as part of our annual engagement survey.Prior to joining Cengage Group, I served as CEO of the Health Science Business at Reed Elsevier (now RELX) and Harcourt. My career began at The Boston Consulting Group.Specialties: Company Turnaround, Culture, Transformation, Restructuring, Strategic Planning, Leadership, Education, Higher Education, Online Skills, Workforce Skills, Education for Employment, Customer Engagement.

Ceo, Cengage GroupCengage Group Sep 2012 - PresentSince 2012, I have led the strategy, performance and ongoing evolution of a $1.4B education technology company that serves millions of learners in more than 120 countries every day. Milestones include:• Leading the century-old education publisher through a successful Chapter 11 reorganization that helped pave the way for the company’s transformation from a struggling higher-ed print publisher, to now, a portfolio edtech company operating in attractive markets and delivering consistent mid-single-digit revenue and profitability growth.• Delivering consistent revenue and profitability growth over the last three years during a turbulent period in education, and amidst continued higher education enrollment declines. • Being named one of Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business in 2020 for leadership in tackling the affordability crisis in higher education with the launch of Cengage Unlimited, the first-ever all-access digital subscription service for higher ed course materials, which has now helped 4.8M+ students save more than $580M. • Evolving Cengage Group’s strategic approach by re-structuring the company into three business units. This revised model allows us to better meet the needs of our student and educator customers, simplify our business model for investors, and accelerate company growth by providing impactful solutions that empower individuals with the education needed to find employment and improve their lives.• During the COVID-19 pandemic, I implemented an intentional focus on building trust and transparency, helping the organization navigate a heightened period of uncertainty and driving significant revenue growth for first time since emerging from bankruptcy.• Recognized by Glassdoor as a Top CEO in both 2018 and 2019 -
