Working in our Mobility division I have helped to specify and design new products to meet customer concepts. These have ranged from Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication systems, Electric Vehicle Conversions, and design of Hydrogen Powered EV systems.As a Technical Architect, it is my responsibility to specify the requirements of the systems we are designing, and ensure that the project delivers on these goals. This ranges from laying out the vehicle systems and interconnects, to designing individual systems in conjunction with the different engineering disciplines.

Leading a team of 8 -10 engineers, I work with my Lead Engineers and the client to deliver engineering projects as an integrated farm-out team within ASML. Working on their full range of machines we help to improve, develop, and sustain the machine environmental conditioning designs and introduce components for their new machines also. Normal responsibilities are very similar to that of a Project manager, but I manage to keep myself somewhat involved in my teams’ activities and do what work I can to help out and fill in the gaps. Typical tasks include:- Client, management and regular reporting of progress.- Planning, estimating, forecasting and organisation of the workload for my team up to a 6-month timeframe- Quality Control and error checking of designs and releasing. Reviewing general engineering documents, 3D models and drawings- Management meetings, performance reviews and general business administration activitiesAs a part-time role, I am the project manager/lead engineer for a small hydrogen electrification project running internally within Capgemini Engineering. The aim is to expand the hydrogen electrification experience within the company. Currently, in our first phase of the project, we have managed to convert a scale-model vehicle to a hybrid battery/hydrogen fuel cell system. We are in the process of going through a review with the company board to secure the next round of funding to allow us to scale up our project and deliver a full-scale mobility prototype by 2022.

I oversaw the motion system for a new 3D Printer project within Ultimaker. I handled all aspects of the parts of the printer that moved. This covered the mechanical, electrical and software parts and all interfaces to other areas of the printer. The decision making and design direction are my primary areas, as well as evaluating and discussing our current direction and progress with the various teams. Most importantly though, I worked alongside my team of engineers to help design and create the systems we needed to meet the requirements set for the project.- Managing a team of engineers, industrial designers, and manufacturing representatives to help divide up work and keep the project moving.- Organising suppliers for the various components required- Defining and modifying the requirements for the motion components of the project.- Working with product management to ensure that our requirements are meeting the customers’ needs and requirements.- Integrating the various functions and helping to problem solve the issues with connecting the different forms of hardware- FEA for critical systems- Designing and prototyping parts- Design and execution of experiments - Development of project specific procedures and plans to help guide the project and ensure consistent actions- Competitor analysis, internal product evaluation and benchmarking- Mentoring the junior engineers in the team to help them learn and develop within the company

*Short-term Contract*I led a team of several designers helping to translate the requirements of the program into real-world designs for Body Structure parts and systems. We work with the CAE, Manufacturing and Package teams to balance the requirements we must meet while also assisting the other teams to achieve their targets and requirements.- Converting customer and management requirements into CAD models for manufacturing and testing.- Planning, estimation, evaluation and optimisation of structural parts to meet cost, timing and weight targets.- Tolerance stack up and specification checks for any new designs before they are released.- Safety and legal testing, evaluating the results each week and making a recovery plan to close any gaps to target. - Training of new team members that join to either replace designers that are away or have left- Risk and Opportunity evaluation, presenting necessary evidence to management for additional funds or attribute degradation- Updating CAD models and structure in Enovia as designs and requirements change.- Meeting with management to explain design directions, current roadblocks, seek approvals for deviations or get decisions on critical issues.

*Short-term Contract*In charge of a team of 5 to 6 engineers, working on the prototype design and build of a closures and body-mount system for a four-door, electric autonomous vehicle. I managed the engineering and construction side and answered to my supervisor in the USA who was the contact point with upper management. Primary duties included:• Navigation of Catia 3DXperience and occasionally V6 to inspect CAD and models. Also, the releasing and tracking software used in 3DX for program management• Management of a small team of engineers and CAD support personnel. • Liaising with Program Management and Engineering management regarding program progress, timing, costs and design changes.• Working closely with all suppliers and tracking progress towards program level goals and resolving inter-supplier issues. Also covered assessing supplier part, fixture and process quality.• Engineering level issue tracking and resolution, and cross-functional meetings to solve design and manufacturing problems.• Physical build of the prototype vehicles and assessing the fit and finish of the overall vehicle before shipping. • On-the-fly manufacturing issue resolution and prototype part creation.• Helping the manufacturing team to setup the fixtures for repeatable installations, identifying needs and issues for future designs of production level fixtures.

*Short-term Contract*In charge of creating and designing the body for a fully electric, commercial vehicle, using recycled carbon-fibre and assembled completely robotically. I worked very closely with the Studio team to help steer the design towards more feasible forms, while keeping the design intent. Starting with an exterior shape, I have taken this and created the entire body structure and interface system, while ensuring that the whole process can still be performed by the robotic assembly cell. Primary duties have included:• Design of all body structure and all interfaces. Creation of all Structural CAD, and digital and 3D printed prototype working parts using Siemens NX 11.0• Working closely with battery, chassis and electrical lead engineers to ensure design will accommodate possible requirements such as venting, routing, temperature management and access.• Meeting with suppliers and toolmakers to assess progress and feasibility of part design, adjusting where necessary.• Liaising with upper management about progress and change requests, consulting them where necessary.• Regular iterations and meetings with external CAE specialists regarding crash, safety, stress and modal analysis of the vehicle structure, iteratively improving the design each time.• Preparing CAD and demonstration images for clients, marketing and potential suppliers.• Weekly meetings with internal material specialists regarding updates to production techniques and new supplier opportunities.• Ongoing meetings with adhesive engineer regarding fixing strategies and adhesive properties.

Main area of work has been centred on sheet metal parts for the 2019 Model release of Ford Transit. Primarily working on Chassis Cab, but also assisting with on-site work for the Van, Bus, Kombi and other variants. These range from body-side panels, brackets, floor pans, underbody structure and mounting points. Working with prototyping and manufacturing, analysing issues in the test and pre-production builds as they arise. Key duties include:• Design and Release of commodities within the Body Structures group in support of local and overseas Product Development projects.• Timely resolution of design issues and management of engineering change control process.• CAD Design and releasing• CAE analysis and iterative development of new designs combined with DFMEA and other problem solving methods.• Planning & execution of cross functional meetings to manage cost, weight and quality targets of Body Structures commodities.• Design, Sourcing, Planning and Testing of Prototype vehicle builds across several countries. Support Launch activities in company plants and suppliers globally. Extensive work in Germany, USA and Turkey plants.• Active use of Ford Product Development tools and processes.• Lead on weight saving and durability improvements. Total of 10% weight removed from Chassis Cab rear underbody through new materials and advanced production techniques.• Assist New Model Programs in planning the body structure for 2023 Ford Transit Chassis Cab. Move towards Electric Vehicles and the problems that arise in the Body Structure• Supplier inspections and audits. Tolerance and quality measurements.

Spada Motorcycles is my own company, specializing in design engineering for motorcycles. It is a side-project that runs indefinitely to help me gain experience and learn new things about industries that I have an interest in. It started off with analysis of improved chassis designs and radical steering systems, such as single-sided, hub-centred mechanisms. These projects have continued on and others started as well.Currently there are three projects being undertaken. The first is the continuation of the hub-centred steering system. This is currently at scale prototype stage and is being evaluated for manufacturing of a full-size prototype. The second is a derivation of the first intended to be connected to a single-sided swing-arm on the front of the motorcycle. Currently at a design check stage, it is put on hold while the prototype original is being tested. Finally, the third project is a small scale Wankel rotary engine. Small scale racing operations and motorcycle restorations are done on the side to help advance my skill set and learning on a regular basis. One Superstock 600 race bike has been completed, as well as the restoration of several old motorcycles from the 1970's and 1980's.

I worked on the Kimberley to Gove Gas Pipeline Project, a 600km natural gas pipeline. The job was a Rio Tinto project and we were working on Early Contractor Involvement before construction was scheduled to start.The entire project was unfortunately cancelled by Rio Tinto due to financial constraints and local government problems.
