In the fourth grade, my school had an "invention convention," where students had to create a device to solve a problem. One day, my mom drove me to pick up my sister from band practice. As I was sitting on a bench outside the band room, I witnessed one of my classmates practicing her flute. Moving her small hand fast enough to cover the holes with her fingers seemed to be quite the struggle, and the result was a pitchy melody that one would expect a fourth-grader to produce. My developing fourth-grade mind was struck with a "brilliant" idea: flute gloves. With large caps on the end of the fingertips of the gloves, they would assist the flutist in playing a more consistent, smooth song. So I got to work; I made the gloves with bottle-caps gorilla-glued to some leather gloves and made a fake flute out of PVC pipe. At my current age of 20, I would never consider pitching "flute gloves" to the industry titans of Shark Tank. I think I would get laughed at. But whether or not that specific invention that I made in fourth grade is useful or not, it sparked in me a curiosity for problem-solving. That is the reason I am pursuing mechanical engineering: to solve the world's problems with clever solutions. And while I may make some mistakes along the way, I am always motivated to keep going and reach my fullest potential as an engineer and problem-solver.A summary about myself: I am currently enrolled at the University of Rochester pursuing a Mechanical Engineering Bachelor's Degree (with Minors in Mathematics and German Language). I have experience programming using Matlab and 3D solid-modeling using Creo Parametric. I also have a broader knowledge of mathematics than most engineers, for my mathematics minor has allowed me to take more math classes than required for engineers. Leadership is one of my defining qualities. I was a camp-counselor for two years at an overnight summer camp, and I am the social programming chair for my Delta Upsilon Fraternity Chapter.
