Founder, Svp Engineering, ProductStardog Jan 2020 - PresentArlington, Va, UsAs SVP, Engineering & Product I have a more direct focus on the engineering and product functions of Stardog. In this role I maintained my previous engineering leadership responsibilities; continuing to work to build and run the engineering team and help guide design decisions. I also work more directly with the other departments in the organization providing Engineering input and channeling new work items, updates, and asks from elsewhere in the company back to engineering.I helped bootstrap our Product organization, hiring our first PM, building our initial roadmap process, and establishing cross functional meetings to provide the initial structure and capabilities to this core component of the business before handing things over to a dedicated VP, Product. After that hand-off, I remained a key contributor in the decision making process for the Product. While I am no longer our primary pre-sales engineer, and evangelism work is much less because of the pandemic, I still am active in interfacing with external parties, that includes customers, prospects, partners, and the occasional conference. Finally, I sit on the Board of Directors of Stardog where I help guide the overall direction of the company. -
Founder, Vp EngineeringStardog Jun 2016 - Jan 2020Arlington, Va, UsI moved into the VP, Engineering role at Stardog after we received our initial round of funding, moving from a full time development position into engineering leadership. As the VP, Engineering, I handled a lot of the day-to-day of building and running our engineering organization. I recruited and hired the world-class engineering team that is now in charge of building the Stardog Platform. I worked closely with the CTO to on high level engineering work such as fleshing out designs for new features and planning roadmap work. I was also able to keep my hands on the keyboard a bit, helping with the occasional bug fix.It was at this time I handed over my responsibilities for handling customer support to a dedicated team.In addition to my engineering responsibilities, I served as our primary evangelist and pre-sales engineering. As our evangelist, I ran the local Knowledge Graph meetup, spoke at other meetings across the EU and NA. I also gave numerous talks and sat on panels at conferences such as Enterprise Data World, FIMA, and Data Architecture Summit. In my capacity as our primary pre-sales engineer, I worked closely with our sales and marketing teams to help craft demos and guide prospects through the process of getting to know Stardog. I brought lessons learned from what was resonating, and what wasn't, back to the broader team to help inform our future roadmap decisions. -
Senior Software EngineerStardog Jun 2006 - Jun 2016Arlington, Va, UsMy time as a Senior Engineer at Stardog was split into two eras. Prior to our pivot to become a product company, I worked closely with our clients on a variety of consulting engagements, usually as a project and engineering lead, bringing my experience in semantic graphs and AI to help them solve interesting challenges. I also helped work on several small business research grants we pursued as a company, often at the direction of the CTO, and always in the same semantic graph & AI space. Throughout this time I worked on and built many systems that would become the inspiration for the Stardog Platform. Several projects from this era resulted in either new open source projects, such as Empire, or contributions back to existing projects, such as RDF4J.Starting in 2010, while still working on our consulting engagements, I began work part time on coalescing what we'd learned from the previous 5 years into what would become the core of Stardog. As the product matured, I took on a lead architect role overseeing all engineering direction, working directly with the CTO, and closely coordinating with the CEO on the overall vision for our new product. I also served as tech support lead and evangelist throughout this period. -
CooLightning Round Entertainment Mar 2003 - Sep 2005LRE was a passion project/company I started with two close friends to pursue our shared passion in gaming. As a small, 3 person shop, we all wore lots of hats throughout our journey, but mostly we all wrote code. My primary two responsibilities were serving as the lead developer and product manager for what would become our flagship product, Word Hive.Word Hive was a fast-paced word game inspired by classics such as Boggle and Scrabble. An intrepid young bee had to form words to collect honey and move through his adventure, confronting several bosses along the way as he tried to save the Queen Bee. In addition to fun game play, and multiple battles against AI opponents, we wove in 45 minutes of cartoons that served as interstitials between segments of the game to firmly root the gameplay in a compelling storyline. Word Hive was a featured game on Grab.com and a focal point of their launch.I addition to my responsibilities with Word Hive, I also helped design and develop two internal frameworks, one in Java and one in Flash. The former was to be used as we started exploring more web-based gaming while the latter was used for rapid prototyping to try out new ideas and game mechanics.

Faculty Research AssistantUniversity Of Maryland, College Park 2003 - 2005College Park, Md, UsI worked as a Research Assistant for the MINDSWAP group at UMD under the direction of Dr. Jim Hendler. The MINDSWAP group was the first research lab in the US for semantic based technologies. My primary responsibility was working with the graduate students in the lab on their research, helping them with the engineering tasks for the projects they were building. I also built reference implementations for some W3C specifications, such as OWL.This allowed me to work on a number of cutting edge projects within this emerging technology field like Pellet, OWL-S, SWOOP, and Photostuff. I also collaborated with researchers on several papers. -
ProgrammerFujitsu Labs Of America May 2002 - May 2003I served as the lead engineer for the Task Computing initiative where we explored how we could create a smart office environment based on open web standards. The was expected to run on hand held devices where users interacted with a visual workflow environment to provision office services and combine them to perform different tasks.I architected the system, defining the interfaces for things like projects and printers, and creating a workflow engine that would dynamically combine the different services in the office environment to perform tasks as directed by the user. This was written in Java and used UPnP to create the network of devices across the WAN. I was also responsible for building the front end, also in Java, which ran best on desktop/laptops, but also worked on hand helds.
