Kinetics started in a spare bedroom, but most of you reading this have used the technology born out of that simple beginning. We were developing what would become the first practical airline ticket purchase and check-in kiosk. Our first customer was Donald Trump—more precisely: Trump Shuttle, a Northeast US airline later acquired by Delta Airlines. We were building systems integrating a ticket printer and a card reader into a touch screen kiosk from NCR. We had to communicate with an airline reservation system designed for human interaction lacking any machine interface and develop mechanical and electrical hardware to present, monitor and recapture tickets.With only three people in the company everybody had to fill many roles. I worked on electronic design from schematic capture to PCB layout, to procurement, test and integration for the motion control system. I developed software for the micro-controller, the back-end application processing and contrived a scripting language for interfacing to the reservation systems. I interfaced the ticket printer and handled formatting of the tickets. I wrote an interface for the card reader and created a protocol for the motion control system which I had designed. I worked on the user interface design, parts procurement, and assembly. I also aided in mechanical CAD design and did much of the mechanical prototyping and mock-up fabrication. All told, it was a huge undertaking and more than we could reasonably handle—yet we delivered. The systems were installed and went live, automating the process that took a ticket agent several minutes. We did it in ten seconds from the moment the user touched the screen until they had tickets in their hand. With a handful of people we created the first practical automated airline ticketing and check-in system in the world—beating several multi-billion dollar companies to market and in the process becoming leaders in the field.
