At some point I discovered that I could open the file location of a shortcut through its properties dialog, and suddenly I found myself looking at the installation files for my copy of Sid Meyer's Civilization II. Nestled among them I was delighted to find a few data and image files that could be opened with Notepad or MS Paint, and I soon learned to my great surprise that edits to those files could alter the appearance and behavior of the game itself... and that's when I discovered the satisfaction that comes from feeling like a hacker.First I learned Visual Basic from a book in my father's little reference library (he was a system admin for Steelcase at the time). It was fun tinkering with form windows and controls, but I had an itch to learn something a little less limiting in scope; so a few years later when I was college student studying philosophy, I took some elective courses in computer science, where I was introduced to Java, C, and a variety of neat toys like linux terminals, ssh, Eclipse IDE, and VirtualBox. I also learned that it was now possible to learn new technical skills completely online, with no need for a big pile of heavy reference manuals, and by the time I graduated, I had already begun to wonder if I would have been better suited for some sort of technical career.In the years that followed, I continued to tinker with Java, while also expanding my interests to other hobbies that all fell at the intersection of the technical and the creative - video editing, image processing, 3D printing, 3D modeling. I also found myself drawn to computer games with an engineering streak to them, like Minecraft, Kerbal Space Program, and Satisfactory. I gradually became more convinced that I was an engineer at heart, and in 2023 I finally decided that the time had come to follow my passion and pivot to a career in software engineering. Keen to waste no more time, I enrolled in the Hack Reactor advanced software engineering immersive program, drawn to their high standards and fast-paced, intensive curriculum.
