About Michael J. Mazur

To briefly summarize, I’m an explorationist with more than 20 years of experience working in space science, geoscience and astronomy. In 2017, I moved from Norway to Canada to explore new opportunities as a technical specialist while working on my PhD at Western University. My experiences abroad helped me develop not only strong technical skills, but also provided me with the opportunity to develop interpersonal skills and a keen business sense.Over the past 20 years I have also been lucky to have worked on quite a number of interesting projects in different disciplines. With an educational background in astrophysics I started out by playing a major role in a project to refurbish and re-purpose a cold-war era satellite tracking camera as a near-Earth object discovery telescope. After the project saw 'first light', I moved with my family to Denmark and then Norway where I worked for 12 years as a geoscientist in the oil and gas industry. Along the way, I've continued to work on another satellite tracking camera retrofit and have developed a small business designing and building custom titanium bicycles. I've tracked fireballs with seismic and infrasound data and have searched for meteorites around the world. In short, I've learned a lot and become a confident scientist and explorer in many different areas.

  • Western University
    Elginfield Observatory Technical Specialist
Western University Aug 2018 - Present
    London, Canada Area
My work at Western University is varied - from designing and building instrumentation for meteor physics and space surveillance to the construction of robotic observatories for rapid imaging of Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs). When I'm not out in the field at Elginfield Observatory, I'm often analyzing data from our many instruments or writing code in Python.
  • University Of Calgary
    System Engineer
University Of Calgary Jul 2016 - Sep 2016
    Calgary, Canada Area
I'm currently working on a 2 month project to little used algorithm to search for asteroids in archived satellite data. The work that I'm doing relies heavily on Python and, so far, is yielding results beyond what even I had expected.

    Bnc Consultant
    Hygga Innovative Technologies 2005 - 2015

As one of my passions has always been astronomy (especially observational), I continue to consult (in my spare time) and help out where and when I can. Being one of the few people in the world who have worked with the refurbishment of Baker-Nunn cameras (see www.bakernunn.org), I occasionally get the chance to consult on the mechanics and optics of these wonderful tools. And I always look forward to the next chance...
  • Hygga Innovative Technologies
    Meteorite Hunter
    Hygga Innovative Technologies 1999 - 2015

Again, because of my astronomical interests, I like to chase fireballs and any meteorites (in my spare time) that may have made it to the ground. I like to involve myself in all aspects of the chase but especially enjoy reducing seismic and infrasound data to help understand not only where meteorites may be found on the ground, but also, where in our solar system they came from.
