Solving the hardest problems in energy, food, water and climate is what motivates me. I approach these problems by linking the analytical toolbox of a Ph.D., with well-honed technical engagement and communication skills, and an acumen for achieving commercial and policy objectives. I am data-driven, but I seek to go beyond the regression to understand core system processes. As a energy-system modeler, my analysis of system processes do not aim to predict the future, but to responsibly guide research, policy and business decisions.I have a decade of experience understanding the biology of algae, the organisms responsible for half of the carbon removal on earth. For my Ph.D., I produced paradigm-shifting biochemical research into how these tiny plants change their environment to lower metal toxicity. More recently, I have developed commercialization strategies, based on detailed financial and economic analyses, for how humans could harvest algae as a food and energy source. My work with Department of Energy-funded research has given me detailed understanding of role that bioenergy, synthetic fuels, and carbon feedstock markets will play in our decarbonized energy system Now, I am at the front lines in the battle against climate change: cities and states. My work aims to figure out how to push forward and implement the actions that energy and climate models show are needed to keep global temperature rises well below 2 degrees C. My work with governments, companies an non-profits requires me to have a broad and deep knowledge of new technologies and implementation strategies to craft plans that will ensure they can decarbonize cost effectively and equitably.
