I let out a laugh and explain, "Well, taxes aren't really my thing." They take a step back, puzzled, and inquire, "So, what exactly do you do?" My reply usually goes something like this: "I work alongside passionate individuals who are on a mission. I collaborate with non-profit organizations and private foundations, ensuring they remain compliant with all government regulations. This ensures that donors can trust their contributions are genuinely dedicated to the mission. In essence, I'm an auditor." Their reaction often follows with, "Wow, your work sounds both fascinating and meaningful." I stand a bit taller and respond, "Thank you!" The takeaway here is that accountants, especially auditors, are financial heroes. Believe it or not, I genuinely look forward to going to work each day. My team and I dive deep into financial statements, yes, filled with numbers and spreadsheets, but it's all in the service of helping our clients fulfill their missions. The past two decades have passed by in a blur, starting from my days as an audit staff member at Ernst & Young, then becoming a controller at Dole Fresh Vegetables, and eventually rising to become a partner at Wheeler Accountants and, currently, a managing partner at BryMar CPA, LLP.
