About Mike Daniels
I am a scientist with over 10 years experience in academia/biotech most recently working on neuroimmunology in chronic neurodegenerative diseases. In my current role as a Research Scientist at AbCellera I work to uncover rare antibodies against challenging targets to treat debilitating diseases. Previously, I worked as a postdoctoral research fellow working for Dr Barry McColl in the UK Dementia Research Institute at the University of Edinburgh. My research focused on the role played by microglial cells and the immune system in the progression and pathogenesis of dementia-causing diseases such as Alzheimer’s. I completed my PhD at The University of Manchester where I studied the regulation of inerleukin-1 and the role of the NLRP3 inflammasome in neurodegeneration, with work to discover and characterize novel NLRP3 inhibitors. I am passionate about public engagement and science communication, co-founding a project aiming to increase public understanding of science called ‘Have You Heard?’. Outside of my work I am a keen hiker/fell runner/mountaineer and I like to get myself on a squash court or a football pitch! Specialities: Neuroimmunology, Microglia, Chronic Animal Models, Primary Cell Culture
Listed skills include Cell Culture, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Western Blotting, and 19 others.

Research Scientist
Co-Founder
Have You Heard? is a project, started in 2017 by a small group of scientists at the University of Manchester. now spread to multiple institutions accross the UK. Our mission is to connect adults with science in a community setting, sparking discussion about what science is, how it makes it to our newspapers or social media newsfeed, and how to interpret this information. At tailored sessions we’ll give you some real examples from our own fields of the journey from an experiment to a news story, and discuss what can go wrong along the way. Then, with your help, we will come up with some ideas for getting science messages to the people who need them quickly and clearly. We’ve also produced an infographic (https://haveyouhearduk.com/) with some top tips on how to interpret science in the news!
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Working with Dr Barry McColl in the UK Dementia Research Institute, I studied microglia and their role in susceptibility/resilience to neurodegenerative disease. I used chronic mouse models as well as in vitro cultures to phenotype microglial reponses to neurodegeneration-related stimuli and answer crucial questions about how microglia change in disease, why they change, and what this means for disease progression. I have also acted as early career researcher (ECR) representative for the UK DRI and Alzheimer's Research UK Scotland Network to promote ECR networking, wellbeing and collaboration in dementia research.
Mrc Dtp Student Rep
Towards the end of 2015 I was asked to support the University application to gain funding for MRC DTP studentships. As student rep for the cohort I was involved in the design of the programme in order to provide a student-focussed DTP and maintain a strong cohort. As part of a team of 4 selected from the governance board on the DTP I travelled to London to interview with the MRC for studentships. As a result of the programme design and our interview performance we were successful in attaining 9 notional studentships, nearly double our previous allocation. I currently sit on the DTP governance board as student rep where I relay the views of the cohort directly to organising body.
Phd Student
During my PhD I studied the role of sterile inflammation in non-communicable disease, specifically in relation to key cytokine IL-1β and its release driven by the inflammasome. Specificcally, I led a project repurposing drugs as novel NLRP3 inhibitors for translation to neurodegenerative disease and was a key player in projects developing new compounds as potent NLRP3 inhibitors. I also studied the related cytokine IL-1α and mechnisms by which is secreted from immune cells.
Undergraduate Researcher
I completed my undergraduate dissertation with a project based on the role of novel histone-deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors in stroke. I used primary neuron culture and oxygen-glucose deprivation to assess protective effects of these drugs and evaluate the potential for use of post-translational modification inhibitors as potential therapeutics for stroke.
Scientist (Neuroimmunology)
I worked in analgesia research on a drug project at MedImmune, Cambridge on a 12-month placement. Upon completion of the 12 months I was offered and accepted a 2 month extension to carry on my research. Over this period I have vastly broadened and developed my knowledge and understanding in a number of key areas. I have significantly expanded my repertoire of assay techniques including but not limited to Chemotaxis chambers, ICC, TaqMan RT-PCR, Primary cell isolations, MSD Cytokine analysis, HTRF assays and FLIPR Calcium Imaging. I have also extended my skills outside of the lab such as presentations, usage of specialist software and experimental write-ups as well as gaining mentoring experience with work experience students.
