About Michael May
I am a Ph.D. candidate at Dartmouth College in Erin Mayfield's Sustainable Transitions Lab. My work focuses on understanding the role of carbon management in meeting climate targets and how the technology scales up to decarbonize different sectors.I am currently working on studies that assess realistic CO2 pipeline networks and the costs associated with using carbon capture and storage (CCS) or Negative Emissions Technologies (NETs) at high volumes. My research integrates over 6000 sites where either CCS can be used at existing facilities or where bioenergy with CCS (BECCS) or direct air capture (DAC) can be utilized into a CO2 pipeline routing model. This model demonstrates how pipeline networks are constructed across the United States to meet carbon capture targets, which geologic sinks will store the waste CO2, and how costs scale with increasing capacity. The results from this study will reveal the economic feasibility of large-scale carbon capture deployment, the pipeline segments to prioritize for construction, and how the unique geology of different storage reservoirs impacts the infrastructure network.I am preparing a publication that will detail these findings and look forward to sharing these by the end of 2024. For anyone interested in energy system modeling and carbon capture - lets connect!

Nsf Grfp Fellow - Sustainable Transitions Lab
CurrentNSF GRFP fellow working with Professor Erin Mayfield in Dartmouth's Sustainable Transitions Lab. I model optimal pathways to decarbonize the U.S. electric power sector. Addressing climate change requires rapid changes to our energy generation mix to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Current state-of-the-art energy systems models inform policymakers about.
Graduate Research Assistant
My Master's research at Dartmouth involved finding solutions to key military problems in the Arctic. I worked with the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and various universities to better constrain the fracture mechanics of sea ice. This involved the acquisition and processing of large datasets to make informed conclusions.
