My research project centered around the significance of nickel and pH regulation in the survival of Helicobacter pylori, a human gastric pathogen. Specifically, I investigated the role of the NikR transcription factor in H. pylori gene response to environmental stresses. Using a variety of techniques ranging from QPCR to DNase footprinting to syncrotron EXAFS, I was able to elucidate the biological action of NikR in the complex system of H. pylori regulation.
