We provided counsel to the Air Force Secretary, Chief of Staff and other leaders during executive misappropriations, resignations & discipline; nuclear mistakes; acquisition wars; etc. Our strategic plans and media training at Dover AFB provided transparency into the human cost of war and contributed to receipt of PRSA’s Silver Anvil for the “Dignified Transfer of Service Members” killed in action.

Installation CommanderUnited States Air Force 2006 - 2008Stavanger Air Station, NorwayMy "Viking Warriors" were a highly recognized team of 41 medical, legal, human resources, finance, postal, logistics, housing, IT, security, supply chain, chaplaincy and recreation services experts whose excellence in performance earned the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and of whom our NATO boss said “never failed to provide exceptional support, on time and with perfection” to 1,200 NATO troops, while managing $1 billion of assets in Norway and Poland on a $1.2 million budget. My legal team administered U.S. foreign criminal jurisdiction in Norway and Denmark, which included gaining custody of disorderly U.S. Guardsmen and arranging life-saving airlift for another Guardsman, and assisting the U.S. Embassy on a politically sensitive rape case. Recognized by Col. Bruce "Batman" Lovely as, "My most responsive commander!" I was honored when my UK-based commander, Col. Jack Jones, joined my retirement ceremony at the Pentagon to present me with the Air Force retiree pin.

Chief Of Public AffairsUnited States Air Force 2004 - 2006Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, JapanGuided a high-speed international team of 17 to earn Air Force’s "Best Large Wing Public Affairs" award; State Department recognized our team's “masterful damage control” following a relentless series of crises: a mid-air collision, an aircraft crash, a helicopter emergency landing in a farmer's field, two U.S.-forced local community evacuations, sexual assault and other crimes against host-nation people, and on and on. Toward the end of this tour I co-built and helped facilitate Okinawa's first joint-nation crisis management tabletop drill. The senior Marine PA officer said he was sad to see me leave, since during my tenure the Air Force had persistently kept negative attention away from the Marines. Okinawa is an absolutely beautiful, friendly place to live, if you have time to enjoy it.

Lo & Kid Rock to Europe; and placed Airmen on network news, in top magazines and on 10 David Letterman shows. I drew the short straw to serve as casualty notification officer to New York City area next of kin for deceased Airmen. Still, it was a glorious assignment for cementing friendships and expanding my skill sets. I'll always remember how New Yorkers represented the very best of the human spirit during the minutes, hours and days that followed the loss of those towers, providing all manner of support to their neighbors. Everyone there that day will forever be New Yorkers at heart.

Mike Short, commander of all allied air forces during the Kosovo Air War. He famously locked eyes with Slobodan Milošević and said, “Mr. President, I have U-2s in one hand and B-52s in the other, and the choice is up to you." He was a great man – a brilliant leader and patriot – who redefined my definitions of integrity, courage and leadership. During the war I provided daily, written guidance to 20 joint-service public affairs teams spread across 30 European sites. In peacetime I oversaw Air Force public affairs activity throughout the Mediterranean region. By host-wing request, I served as initial lead for the communication response team and later full-time adviser to the Marine board investigating the collision of a Marine jet with a ski-lift gondola that killed 21 people from seven European countries. Also thrilled to support Aviano PA leaders by directing all reception logistics for news media covering two presidential visits.

Then traveled on-scene and helped leaders at Dharan Air Base in Saudi Arabia communicate to international media after terrorists killed 19 Airmen in Khobar Towers. From Italy our team helped set up information operations for airstrikes on Bosnian Serb targets. Cited in my performance evaluation as "a prime reason" our Air Force team earned PRSA's Silver Anvil award for "Creating and Implementing Peace in Bosnia."

Chief Of Public AffairsUsaf 1992 - 1994Izmir Air Station, TurkeyLed a 5-person team that produced an award-winning employee magazine and strengthened host-nation support for 1,700 U.S. forces in western Turkey. While deployed to Germany, I escorted U.S. and international media aboard C-130 food and medical airdrop missions over Bosnia-Herzegovina to aid the besieged Muslim communities of Zepa and Gorazde. While deployed to Spain, I escorted media on air-refueling tankers that sustained the air bridge for the Somalia humanitarian relief mission (where I also filed daily, on-air reports with American Forces Network Radio-Europe). In Turkey our team provided direct support to a large medical clinic of 18 doctors and nurses, plus 20 or so healthcare staff, and I served as an on-call crime scene photographer.

At MacDill I directed all media coverage for Queen Elizabeth II’s knighting of Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf; led a team planning and executing publicity for the largest two-day air show in North America; served as member of the Super Bowl XXV Tampa Bay Task Force; supported a 200,000-outpatient hospital; served as lead government spokesperson for the nationally visible court-martial of the only officer convicted of Gulf War crimes; and lots more. Along the way I met, and learned from, some of the most talented and wonderful people on Earth.
