  • Gusto!
    Software Engineering
    Gusto! Oct 2016 - Jun 2023
    San Francisco, California, Us
My time at Gusto has been primarily focused on teaching others and paying off technical debt. Accomplishments include:- Led a small team to refactor the core payroll calculator, which processes over $1 billion per month. We wanted to fix bugs with 401(k) calculations and make the calculator safer and easier to change.- Created a team called "product infrastructure" to handle activities like Rails and Ruby upgrades, technical migrations, and code organization as Gusto scaled to hundreds of engineers.- Contributed to the end-of-year engineering efforts. For payroll companies, end-of-year is an important time to help our customers close out their calendar years.- Shared the company's learnings at conferences throughout the world including Railsconf, Rubyconf AU, Brighton Ruby, GoRuCo, Sin City Ruby, and RubyHACK.- Became the unofficial ambassador of Gusto's Seattle office. Held a few happy hours and organized a few outings to Mariners games.- Built a briefcase that deploys code.Attached are few blog posts that have resulted from these efforts.

  • Layervault
    Founder, Cto
    Layervault Dec 2011 - Apr 2015
Took LayerVault from just an idea with a cofounder all the way through a seed round and a Series A, and then all the way back down again. LayerVault was a home for designers by providing comprehensive version control for creative files. We never quite found product-market fit, and eventually died the death that many startups do.I had the opportunity to discuss my experiences at LayerVault on a few podcast episodes on the Spec.fm network:- http://spec.fm/podcasts/immutable/29201- http://spec.fm/podcasts/design-details/32877Most of the world may remember LayerVault for being the original creators of Designer News. You know, Hacker News but blue and for designers. Upon wind down, the LayerVault assets were liquidated to interested parties. Designer News still lives on to this day.

  • Blip.Tv
    Junior Software Engineer
    Blip.Tv Jun 2010 - Sep 2011
Brainstormed, designed and implemented blip.tv's "Thumbnail Picker." The Thumbnail Picker was the first-of-its-kind realtime thumbnail selector and image manipulator for video files, all performed in-browser (all of them) using the HTML5 canvas element and some pixel-pushing. The most difficult part of the project required trading raw JPEG data between the flash video player and the page quickly. Upon release, many show producers tweeted, "Why hasn't anyone done this before?"Learned enough Perl to realize it's probably not the best language to choose in 2011. The web framework developed in-house made it a breeze and a pleasure to work with.Implemented the first HTML5 video player with advertising technology in the world, working with a yet-to-be-finalized specification and more edge cases shuttle launch. Okay, maybe not that many edge cases. Designed and implemented a static asset pipeline system similar to Rails 3.1 for the blip code base. The system uses the template files themselves to determine dependencies and inclusions through normal vanilla HTML script elements. Thus, the template files themselves dictate which JS and CSS files to concatenate and include without any special syntax or configuration. This allows us to bring our JS and CSS includes down from ~200 per page to 2. This static asset pipeline allows blip to treat JavaScript as a first-class language.
