About Michael Kerrigan

For the past 5 years, I have worked in the area of student representation at a local level with GMIT Students' Union and at a national level with the Union of Students in Ireland.As President of USI, I am the spokesperson for 374,000 students across the Island of Ireland. I am responsible for leading a team of 17 full-time officers and staff, implementing the policies passed by USI Congress and coordinating a large number of campaigns on a national level.Some main areas of my work include:* Higher Education Funding - "Education is in the red" A campaign calling for increased funding for Higher Education and for the government to rule out a student loan scheme culminating with 20,000 students attending a demonstration in October 2017. Since the launch of this campaign, €16.5m has been announced for increased access to higher education and the Minister of State for Higher Education has stated that student loans schemes are off the table.* "Student for choice" A student led campaign called on the repeal of the 8th amendment, successfully securing a May date for the referendum, trained hundreds of students in canvassing and directly registered 27,000 student to vote.* "Homes for study" - Housed 4,000 students in digs style accommodation. Continue to campaign for capital funding to me made available to HEIs to develop student accommodation on campus, also campaigning for legislation to protect students living in purpose build student accommodation and digs.
