Michael Kleine, a career member of the U.S. diplomatic corps, currently serves as Director of the U.S. Department of State's Entry-level Division. He is responsible for the training and assignments of first- and second-tour Foreign Service Officers and for preparing new diplomats for success at home and abroad. Previously, Mr. Kleine served as Chargé d'affaires of U.S. Embassy Jakarta in Indonesia; Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassy Jakarta; Consul General in Melbourne, Australia; Deputy Chief of Mission of U.S. Embassy Vientiane in Laos; and, Minister-Counselor for Economic Affairs at U.S. Embassy Seoul. Over the course of his Foreign Service career, Mr. Kleine has also served on detail with the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, contributed to U.S. policy on North Korea, managed U.S.-Philippines relations for the State Department's East Asian and Pacific Bureau, and supported consular operations in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He also practiced law in Washington, D.C.Mr. Kleine earned both his undergraduate and law degrees at Duke University. He also has a master's degree in national security strategy from the National War College in Washington, D.C.
