I was the Chief Legal Counsel for Veteran Benefits Guide. VBG is a private company designed and dedicated toward helping disabled veterans such as myself reapply for disability benefits through the Department of Veteran's Affairs. My responsibilities included providing the CEO with informed counsel so that he could make the best decisions for the company. Among my other tasks, I managed the company's intellectual property portfolio, negotiated and drafted large and complex contracts, advised Human Resources on all things related to employment, wrote policies centered around privacy and internal and regulatory compliance and managed the compliance department for the company. I was also the Director of Government Affairs and spent much of my time in Washington D.C., advocating for more options for veterans to access their disability claims. It was in this role that I built a nationwide lobbying effort and worked directly with VBG's Chief Marketing Officer to create a fifty state public affairs campaign. As a Chief, I was also involved in business and growth strategies and advised the Chief Operations Officer on ways in which the department could more efficiently operate to achieve the company's goals.
