The hallmark of philosophical inquiry is that philosophers can only make progress by thinking about what is not already apparent. I've always been drawn to understanding the not-so-apparent features of a problem. I believe that challenging the unknown head-on - even if we are not certain there is an unknown - is the key to driving a mission forward. As a Philosophy major at the University of Pennsylvania, I have explored the art of communication through argumentation. Reading Kant's Metaphysics of Morals, I disagreed with the feasibility of applying his principle of universality to ethics; but in critiquing his argument in a paper I wrote for my Philosophy of Law course, I realized how his principle of universalization can be an important guiding mechanism for certain topics in ethics, such as in intellectual property. Through engaging with a range of philosophical texts, I have learned the importance of combining disagreement with a receptive attitude. I especially have developed my inquiry in my work as a Peer Educator working with the Financial Wellness program at Penn. Within my current year of work here, I've sharpened my understanding of personal finance and developed my critical thinking skills by consulting with fellow students on their unique financial circumstances. As I work one-on-one with student clients, I strategically analyze their assets and coordinate a financial budget that works for them. With my peers, I've developed creative suggestions to unique problems - such as designing a strategic cost-cutting framework for students to optimize grocery expenses and boosting their savings through data-driven insights on local grocery chains. As I enter my second year with the growing team, I am excited to continue to contribute to the financial well-being of Penn's community.
