After 30 years with the London patent attorney firm Kilburn & Strode, I retired from legal professional practice at the end of March 2013. I was a trustee and director of the charity Wikimedia UK from June 2013 to 2019 (chair of the board Dec 2013 - Jul 2017).

It does this by bringing the Wikimedia community in the UK together, and by building links with UK-based cultural institutions, universities, charities and other bodies. As the Wikimedia chapter covering the United Kingdom, the charity also represents UK-based Wikimedians to the Wikimedia Foundation and the global Wikimedia movement.

Michael was Kilburn & Strode’s IT partner, and is a European and UK Patent Attorney. He studied for his first degree in Natural Sciences (physics) at the University of Cambridge, where he graduated with first class honours in 1980. After completing his degree he moved to Geneva, where he carried out postgraduate research in particle physics at CERN. Michael trained as a Patent Attorney with Kilburn & Strode, qualifying in 1987. He was awarded the Gill prize in that year for the student achieving the highest overall results in the national Patent Attorney final examinations. Following his appointment as a partner in the firm in 1991, he obtained a law degree (LLB Honours) from the University of London. Michael’s main areas of professional interest and expertise were in IT, electrical and physics-related inventions. • In the IT field he handled a wide variety of software inventions including business methods, e-commerce and other internet-related applications, data and image processing, data compression, encryption and secure computing, mathematical modelling, neural networks, agent-based systems, and object-based programming techniques. • In the physics field he dealt with such topics as semi-conductor devices, optics, medical physics, imaging, data collection and analysis, and quantum physics. His clients included a large number of high tech companies, universities, academic tech-transfer organizations, spin-offs and start-ups. He sat on the Disciplinary Panel of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, in which role he was involved in adjudicating on complaints of professional misconduct made against UK Patent Attorneys.Michael retired from practice in March 2013.
