About Michael Mareno

Policy wonk with close to four years of legislative, legal, and organizing experience. Intensely passionate about workers’ rights, immigration reform, and social welfare.Recent graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park with degrees in Government & Politics and English Language & Literature. Currently @ UMD completing a Master’s in Public Policy.--- Michael currently serves as a Graduate Assistant with the Student Legal Aid Office at UMD. In this role, he works alongside the supervising attorney to manage a team of student advocates and interns and to represent the office at university events. Most recently, Michael served as a field and data coordinator on Delegate Nicole Williams’ campaign for the Maryland General Assembly. In this capacity, he oversaw the campaign’s use of voter data through the DNC Votebuilder as it related to engagement efforts and developing strategic action plans. Previously, Michael has served as a legislative intern with Delegate Nicole Williams in the Maryland General Assembly, representing the residents of District 22 in Prince George’s County. He worked primarily to write testimony and coordinate with organizational partners on a progressive slate of legislation, including bills to allocate state funding towards the legal fees of immigrants facing deportation proceedings and to protect tenants at risk of eviction due to financial hardship from the COVID-19 pandemic.During his time on campus, Michael organized with student groups such as the Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society and MaryPIRG. He worked on successful student-led campaigns to end UMD’s contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour for union employees in the University System of Maryland.Michael has substantial research experience in the policy areas of immigration reform and social welfare. In the summer following his junior year, he attended the PPIA Junior Summer Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied wage rates in the H-1B guest worker program and proposed tangible policy solutions to address pay inequity. In his final two years as an undergraduate, Michael wrote a 65-page thesis discussing presidential rhetoric during the Reagan, Clinton, and Obama administrations and the impact it had on the American social safety net.When he isn't talking politics, Michael enjoys reading high fantasy, playing Magic: the Gathering with friends, or relaxing on the beach in his hometown of Ocean City, MD.
