In 1997 was promoted to the National Vice President, Government Relations & Advocacy position. Assumed position and responsibility for all government affairs work at a time when the ADA decided to make the government affairs function a high priority. During nearly 10 years at the ADA, grew the function from 3 people to more than 20 with a focus on both federal and state legislation and policy. During tenure, built a strong grassroots lobbying capability and created the ADA Legal Advocacy function which continues to play a strong and unique role for the organization in the defense of people with diabetes who face discrimination in the workplace, school, etc.• Developed and implemented federal and state diabetes legislative strategies. Served as a member of the Senior Management Team.• Lobbied members of Congress, senior Administration health officials and state legislators. • Advised and supported national volunteer advocacy committee and industry advisory committee. • Led a professional federal, state and grassroots lobbying staff that grew from a team of 3 to 22.Key Achievements:- Won passage of major Medicare reform expanding coverage for diabetes supplies and education, including coverage for the insulin pump.- Tripled federal research spending on diabetes between 1997 and 2003.- Coordinated, managed and advised successful campaigns in 44 states to enact legislation requiring insurance reimbursement for diabetes equipment and education.- Filed and ultimately settled lawsuit with KinderCare, the country’s largest day care provider, winning access for children with diabetes.Previously held the position of Director and Vice President for Government Relations (1994 - 1997).
