I have returned to my "normal" faculty position and stepped down as an administrator at the College of Information Sciences and Technology! I will continue as the Director of the MINDS Group , an interdisciplinary research enclave that focuses on team cognition, intelligent systems, and scaled world simulation as applicable to complex real world domains such as crisis management, cyber security, and command, control, communications, and intelligence. Although I technically jump-started my academic career as a visiting professor at Ohio State, I began my tenure track position in 2000 as an untenured associate professor at the College of Information Sciences and Technology, Penn State University. Owing to my vast experience in research I was given associate professor (rather than assistant professor status). During the mid-2000s I received tenure in our College and a few years later a was promoted to full professor. I am very grateful for these accomplishments as both were hard to obtain. Additionally, I am an affiliated professor in the Department of Learning and Performance, College of Education, and an affiliated professor in the Department of Psychology, College of Liberal Arts. I have also been a fellow in the Geo-Vista Center, Department of Geography.

My new position provides strategic vision and insight for the College as it relates to: a) academic-faculty affairs b) graduate studies and research c) online environments, and d) information technologies. A primary objective is to facilitate and maintain a top ranking and reputation in all relevant academic, research, and educational areas represented within the College. The College’s international/national position in the area of information sciences and technology must be resilient and sustainable across the next ten years of growth as it pertains to students, faculty, staff or ranking/reputation. Part of this is a constant awareness with respect to inspiring consilience among multiply diverse disciplines wherein transformational science is not only possible but expected. The job must insure that the College is always in a competitive position for obtaining the best and brightest, accomplishing the highest academic performance possible, being excellent stewards of the resources provided to us, and to always obtain the highest level of ethics and responsibility.

Senior Scientist position in charge of the Collaborative Technology Laboratory. This lab is the "Cradle of Human Factors" and I was privileged to conduct many studies and design various complex systems while working in my home town. I also worked with top scientists around the world in this position.

I conducted research, provided reviews, and taught undergraduate / graduate coursework related to cognitive systems engineering, design of complex systems, and human-computer interaction (HCI) within the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. Professor David Woods was a critical force in mentoring and influencing much of my thinking about cognitive systems and the role of context. I enjoyed my time working at Ohio State and it was my first real taste of academia in a meaningful way.

Involved with cognitive psychology and computational science areas in an integration that afforded research in the areas of cognitive science / learning science. Much of this research looked at team cognition, transfer of knowledge, and access constraints on memory. My advisor was Dr. John Bransford (now at the U. of Washington).

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (Dayton) Oh

This job afforded great opportunities for research, analysis, and design within aviation systems. While at the Crew Station Design Facility I was enabled to work with pilots on the F-16 cockpit and be involved in some of the early human-computer interaction work for the USAF.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Oh (Contractor For Seafac, Asd, Wpafb, Oh)

I provided drafting and design specialization for electro-mechanical engineering applications involving avionic test systems. I completed more than 1000 drawings for the U.S. Air Force during my collective time in this position. This position effectively utilized my degree in Design and was a pleasureful experience as my first job out of College.
