As an undergraduate and graduate student at UCSC I did research analyzing the geographic relationships between toxic sites and demographics over time (see attached curriculum vitae). I was then hired as a consultant by Environmental Defense Fund to create the interactive maps for their Scorecard.org project. During this time I also developed a GIS mapserver for a local ISP that brought important civic information to the public’s attention.Since then I have created many GIS projects exploring such things as the relationship between cell towers and breast cancer in Marin County; Google Earth with watersheds, toxic release inventory facilities, and EPA criteria pollutants; toxic releases and demographics in Silicon Valley; and toxic releases and Native Americans (see below for the full list). My most recent project, ToxicRisk.com, is a “mashup” using Google Maps with the latest EPA toxic release inventory data and schools in the U.S. with links to RTK Net for facility information and Scorecard.org for chemical information. When I was in grad school in the 80s I was doing environmental justice research. At the time no one at UCSC was doing GIS. So, I learned on my own and have been working at it ever since.
