Profile bio

About Michael Carney

I’m a creative director, designer and multidisciplinary artist in the New York metropolitan area, who strives to make work that feels undesigned and also immediately familiar. Over two decades, I’ve held roles as a creative director, art director and graphic designer at multinational, global companies in the fashion and retail industries, while also working as a freelance creative consultant for Grammy-Award-winning artists and household-name brands … more on that below. My career began early, during my first year of art school (B.F.A., Columbus College of Art & Design), when I started designing album covers, flyers and t-shirts for rock ‘n’ roll bands. The Black Keys, also early in their career, asked me to create the artwork for their demo recording. Suddenly, I was the creative director of the band, responsible for developing and designing every visual output the band has had in the past 20 years. In 2011, I won the Grammy Award for Best Album Package, for my work on their album “Brothers.” I’ve sat on the corporate side, as well, in positions at Marc Jacobs, Abercrombie & Fitch, and American Eagle, where I was responsible for the creative development, design and rollout of multiple high-profile brands, products and key marketing artwork, as well as leading teams of designers creating products within these brands.Outside of my work with The Black Keys, as a freelance consultant, I’ve created artwork for more than 50 records for a select group of top record labels and artists, most notably Dr. John, John Denver, Junior Kimbrough and Randy Newman, along with many others.I’ve also worked extensively with corporate clients, including Yeezy, Warner Brothers Records, Bedwin & The Heartbreakers, Netflix, Urban Outfitters, J.Crew, The Gap, Nonesuch Records, Universal Music Group, Volcom, Girl Skateboards, Birdhouse Skateboards, Pendleton Woolen Mills, Native Sons Eyewear, and Victoria’s Secret. What does the actual work look like? Massive stylistic variation jumping between mediums, methods and techniques so frequently, you’d be surprised they were created by the same person. Often conceptual and humorous. Aesthetically, quite minimal — low-brow minimalism inspired by utilitarian design, outsider art, DIY design and generic product design. See it for yourself: www.carneymichael.com
