Michael conceptualized and led a collaborative study to assess the effects of a novel small molecule on the cardiac sodium ion channel and heart function. This small molecule is currently being developed as a therapeutic against triple-negative breast cancer by interacting with Lamin-A/C, a protein that Michael et al. had previously shown to be important in patients with cardiac conduction disease and heart failure. The results of this study demonstrated, for the first time, that region-specific post-translational modifications of Lamin-A/C has a functional impact on the heart. Michael designed and performed functional cardiac electrophysiology studies that delineated the underlying role of novel LMNA (Lamin-A/C) and SCN5A (Nav1.5) genetic mutations in patients with cardiac arrhythmias often associated with dilated cardiomyopathy (heart failure). In 2015, Michael was invited to present the findings of his research at both the Heart Rhythm Society (Boston) and American Heart Association (Orlando) conferences.
