Managing select group of senior architects and principal engineers focused on platform and infrastructure concerns, governing technical strategy for the Clarity PPM (Project Portfolio Management) product suite. Appointment to Chief Architect coincided with closure of the Platform project (see below) and kickoff of major new Clarity release project. Major focal points were rich Web 2.0 UI and SaaS deployment. Personal involvement (down to occasional coding) included modifying and optimizing product for SaaS deployment, including multi-tenancy retrofitting and evaluation and adoption of additional SaaS platform for new PPM solutions (force.com). Personally initiated and helped guide graphical design overhaul utilizing outside firm.Other duties include representing technical design and direction of Clarity PPM to customers, group executives and broader CA architects community, authoring top level design specs, defining supported platform stack and ensuring engineers have the right tools and equipment to execute properly.

Grew and led Platform engineering team (18 at peak) with mandate to create a modern platform based on Clarity for future CA products. Introduced Scrum methodology early in the project, one of the first projects at CA to do so. Provided functional and technical guidance and reviewed designs. Marquee features included component framework based on OSGi, service framework based on Apache CXF, UI framework built upon GWT, and a build and test automation framework using Ant, Ivy, TeamCity (jetbrains.com) and TestNG.

Directed the engineering team responsible for platform and infrastructure of the Clarity PPM product suite. Clarity platform (initiated circa 2002) is made up of RDBMS schema and DDL support, persistence controller, metadata-driven object framework, hierarchal security model, metadata-driven view (UI) framework, personalization framework, business process engine, job scheduler, and distributed system administration (clustering).

Niku Corporation was a well-funded startup bent on bringing Knowledge Management to the enterprise. Went public in 2001, then transitioned into pure project and portfolio management software with acquisitions and first release of Niku 6 (aka Clarity) in 2003. Acquired by CA Technologies in June 2005.

Co-founded Alyanza out of Stanford University. Privately funded and small, Alyanza brought its first product, a client-server enterprise time and expense tracking application, to market from a dorm room, a home office and finally our small headquarters in Mountain View, California. After acquiring first customer and luring our second, Alyanza was itself acquired by Niku Corporation after less than two years in business.Designed and implemented the flagship TimeTrack product from conception through release. TimeTrack was an early pure-Java three-tier application relying on the fledgling Java Swing UI framework on the client and almost equally new WebLogic Tengah server on the back end, first with a Corba interface and then Java RMI to connect the two, using JDBC to the database on the third tier. That application itself was configurable with an early metadata API to mold itself to the needs of the business, and included full multi-lingual capability to target the North and Latin American market. Scaled team to peak of eleven employees. Without much hesitation sold the business to Niku in Redwood City. (I have never worked harder or socialized less than those years at Alyanza, and barely recall how we did it.)
