My favorite title was "Technical Support Engineer". That title was later changed to fit modern title norms, but let me break that down a bit:Support: Support was literally my middle name. I try to help - concerning technology when I can, but if somebody needs help, I'm willing to help. If the office manager needs coffee made for an executive meeting, and if I can do so without detriment to my primary duties, I'll help.Technical: That's my field of expertise - computers and related technology. Hardware, software, networking, programming, multimedia - if it involves computers, I probably have enough experience with it to figure out what's needed. Most of my time in that role involved user support, but I also gained experience with networking, network administration, and programming.Engineer: Don't settle for "good enough". If something isn't ideal, improve it. Make it more reliable. Take what's good and make it better. Do so while following good practice - take all reasonable precautions not to break what's working, but make a new version, test it, get feedback, then implement it. Just supporting people when things go wrong is not enough - make it so that the same thing doesn't go wrong the next time. If someone asks for help, help. Then show them how, so they may not need to ask next time. And if it's too complicated for them to do themselves - find an easier way. Do the hard part yourself once, so they don't have to, and you will also find the next time for you is easier too. And in the end, life is better for everyone.My current paid position includes software development, systems improvement, server administration, and network administration, involving, among other things, Solaris Unix and an xBase database system called Recital, which itself uses programming language similar to C.And I also work with the City of Bristol Virginia, where I helped with the City Council for about a decade without any official position, worked on the Planning Commission for six years (an appointment), and after several tries, I was able to win election to the City Council for a term of four years. My elected role includes the opportunity for about a half-dozen board appointments, which I greatly enjoy. As with my paid work, I try to help things work more smoothly and as they are supposed to.
