Perhaps the biggest lesson I learned during this phase of my career was that very little can ever be accomplished without influencing others. Wicklander-Zulawski and Associates are the world leader in non-confrontational interview and interrogation training and advising. I was fortunate enough to spend a decade with WZ running their investigations division and travelling the world both conducting interrogations and educating investigators from wide variety of industries and agencies on the techniques necessary gain obtain the truth by building rapport and demonstrating respect. The lessons I learned from the interrogation rooms, training rooms, board rooms and bar rooms I shared with thousands of people shaped my approach to creating the Disciplined Listening Method.

The context evolves and the same skills apply. The skills and approaches that drive success in detecting dishonesty are great for motivating teams. In theory everyone had the same goal - to maximize profits. However it didn’t always feel that way when one team was focused on reducing losses while everyone else was focused on driving sales. This was especially true when, I had little direct authority over the sales staff. Bringing everyone together to accomplish both goals was the daily challenge. Careful observations and strategic conversations allowed me to understand each individual’s motivations, further unify the focus and drive successful programs to achieve our operational goals while earning the investigator of year award in 2006 and 2007.

I was surprised by what I could learn by observing and engaging with people. Identifying and apprehending shoplifters quickly taught me how an individual’s behavior will often give away their greater intentions. Interrogating dishonest employees opened my eyes to the painful information people are willing to share when they are approached with dignity, respect and understanding. These skills became the foundation for our teams successes.

If I listened long enough, I would understand what people really wanted. Being responsible for providing service on 401k plans for large companies like Ford, General Motors, AT&T, and Time Warner meant I had the opportunity to talk to hundreds of people a day. What participants said they needed was often different from what they really needed. Providing exemplary customer service was easy, even when the customers didn’t get the answer they wanted, as long as I listened carefully to what they really needed.

Working with disabled students and adults taught me humility, empathy and patience. Supporting students in school environments proved rewarding as each student grew more successful academically, socially and athletically. Supporting disabled adults in the community proved rewarding when they were able to experience so many things the rest of us take for granted. I have no doubt I took more from these experiences than anyone I supported.
