Beginning as a lighting technician and lighting designer, he subsequently served as house lighting director for Chicago's Park West Nightclub between 1978 and 1982. He has worked as a production rigger since 1980, touring with numerous acts that include Michael Jackson, the Ohio Players, and New Kids on the Block. In the early 1990s, Michael Reed foresaw the growing need to provide expert rigging services and equipment rentals to local shows and events and established Reed Rigging in 1993, finding early success with Detroit and Chicago auto shows and a number of film shoots, including blockbusters like Natural Born Killers.Reed Rigging prides itself on the quality of its products and services and its high level of care in preparing for events. It operates in a variety of venues, hanging anything from video, sound, and scenery to computerized rigging and lighting.

  SINCE 1977 I HAVE WORKED IN ENTERTAINMENT PRODUCTION. FIRST AS A LIGHTING TECHNICIAN AND A LIGHTING DESIGNER, AND SINCE 1980 AS A PRODUCTION RIGGER. BEGINNING IN 1977 AND ENDING IN 1989, I TOURED WITH THE FOLLOWING ACTS: BARRY MANILOW, THE OHIO PLAYERS, ENGLAND DAN AND JOHN FORD COLEY, THE COMMODORES, LOVERBOY, THE MOTELS, BRYAN ADAMS, NIGHT RANGER, ELTON JOHN, RICK SPRINGFIELD, MICHAL JACKSON, JANET JACKSON, THE NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK. DURING THAT TIME—FROM 1978 TO 1982--I WAS ALSO THE HOUSE LIGHTING DIRECTOR AT THE PARK WEST NIGHTCLUB IN CHICAGO. IN 1993 I FOUNDED REED RIGGING, INC., NOW THE LARGEST EVENT RIGGING COMPANY IN THE MIDWEST. REED RIGGING MISSION STATEMENT: Our job is to provide rigging equipment and services that stay in the air and don’t kill anyone. We accomplish this by using solid, provable rigging formulas and practices. This principle will be followed without regard to outside pressure including price considerations or time constraints.
