Growing up in a small, rural village in the Northeast of Scotland, my upbringing was very different to most. At 12 years old I started my first job on the local farm rouging barley, working 40-hour weeks throughout the summer. This work continued all through my life alongside my education until I eventually moved to Amsterdam for a 6 month period in 2021.Growing up in a rural area and going to a primary school with just 30 pupils, the transition between primary school and high school was one of the biggest changes in my life. I was lucky enough to have some friends through football which made things slightly easier, however it was still a massive change for me. Despite having to adapt massively, my years at Mackie Academy were some of the best years of my life.Born into a family heavily rooted in the Oil and Gas industry, I chose to create my own path and followed the route of Architecture & Design. I began my journey into further education at Robert Gordons University where I studied Architectural Technology. Although it was tough, my 4 years at university were both enjoyable and rewarding, where I graduated with a BSc (Hons).During my third year at University, I got the opportunity to study abroad in Amsterdam. Having always lived in a rural village, moving to the centre of a large city in another country was definitely challenging, but I threw myself at it headfirst. During my time away, I spent 6 months at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences studying “Future Proof City”. Having the opportunity to work alongside people from all over the world was an invaluable experience which I learnt greatly from.Upon graduating from Robert Gordons University in June 2023, I was eager to begin my professional journey and get straight in to work. In the same month as my graduation, I came on board at Revive Intra as a Project Design Coordinator where I have been learning endless amounts of valuable skills and information which is key in growing as a professional in any industry. That’s a small part of my story, I’d love to hear more about you!

FounderScratno Dec 2021 - PresentGlasgow, Scotland, United KingdomDuring Covid-19 and with not much else to do, my friends and I decided to learn how to DJ.Music had always been a big part of my life, as well as my friends, so a lot of our time stuck inside during lockdown, was spent on the decks. After a lot of practice, we were all fully capable of playing a full set, so we decided to start throwing big house parties down in Glasgow, where a lot of my friends were studying at University. After becoming better and better, and the parties becoming more and more popular, it was evident that we had outgrown the house parties. In December of 2021, we through our first club night in D2, Aberdeen where we sold out the show over a week before the night. Since then, we have hosted regular successful nights in both Aberdeen & Glasgow where we have sold out venues in both cities. One of our biggest accomplishments since the beginning of Scratno was making the 2023 summer “Cultivate” lineup. Cultivate is the largest electronic music festival in the Northeast of Scotland, hosting some of the biggest names in the scene across 2 days.We have since moved away from Aberdeen, and have a monthly residency in Broadcast, Glasgow. We have been steadily growing and have hosted many successful nights collaborating with other collectives and booking various artists across the country.By founding Scratno, I have learnt invaluable skills in event management, digital marketing, networking, and performing.

Potato Roguing Team LeaderJohn I Forbes Jun 2019 - Aug 2022Slains Park, Aberdeenshire, United KingdomAfter 3 long years in the potato fields, it was my turn to take charge.I was the Team Leader every summer for 3 years, essentially sacrificing all aspects of my social life to ensure that the work was done to a high standard. My final year rouging potatoes was in 2022, where I then left my home in a small village for the first time, and moved to Amsterdam to further my studies. As glad as I was to be moving away from the long, labour-intensive hours, it was definitely a job which taught me a lot about myself, and the values of hard work, people management, quality control and time management.

Potato Roguing Assistant Team LeaderJohn I Forbes Jun 2016 - Jun 2019Slains Park, Aberdeenshire, United KingdomAfter two summers of working as a barley rouger, it was time to learn potatoes!I began by getting trained in how to rogue potatoes, where it very quickly became apparent that this would be a much tougher job than barley rouging. Rouging potatoes was much more physically demanding, longer hours, and required constant concentration and perseverance.Potato rouging had a much larger workload, and far less time to complete the work. There were days I would work 16-hour shifts and wake up at 7am just to do it all again, resulting in weeks where I’d work in excess of 90 hours, at just 14/15 years old.The main aspect of this role was to ensure the quality of the crop was of a high standard to ensure profits in excess of 1,000,000 GBP.

Barley Roguing Team LeaderJohn I Forbes Jun 2015 - Jun 2016Slains Park, Aberdeenshire, United KingdomAfter a full summer of working as a barley rouger, the next year had come, and it was time to get back in to the fields. On my second year, I was given the responsibility of being the team leader, managing other young employees across a summer of barley rouging. This at the time seemed like a large responsibility to have at a young age, but I was eager to get stuck in.Being the team leader required greater time management, as well as people management. It was my job to ensure that fields were completed to a high standard and 1to a tight time schedule.

Barley RoguerJohn I Forbes Jun 2014 - Jun 2015Slains Park, Aberdeenshire, United KingdomMy first job began at just 12 years old.Growing up in a rural area, I was always around the agricultural industry. When I first started high school, I took the decision to work a summer job on the local farm, Slains Park, to make some extra cash. This job required me to work 40 hours, Monday to Friday, rouging barley in fields in and around the local area. No matter the weather conditions, sunshine or rain, you would find me walking up and down the fields. Although this job may just sound like a walk in the park, or field, it was far from it. Working full-time hours at such a young age proved to be very challenging, mentally and physically. Despite the struggles, I stuck in and seen the 6 weeks of summer work through to the end.Rouging barley taught me some invaluable life skills and highlighted the importance of time management, quality control, dedication and resilience within a work environment. These are qualities which I believe to be at the core of any successful work environment.

One of my main roles was as a cashier where I was required to handle card and cash transactions in a busy environment.
