My first and still only employer was AZ Sint Lucas in Ghent, Belgium, where I started as a nurse on a surgical ward. After one year, I began caring for patients with pulmonary diseases, and later, I worked on an orthopedic ward. An ideal area of expertise given my background in physiotherapy. I also was the go-to person for co-workers with computer issues and new features in the computer systems on the ward.In 2007, I had the chance to put my computer skills to practice in teaching and coaching coworkers using computers in a hospital setting.Since October 2009, I took part in a project team implementing an electronic health record (nursing and medical documentation) in a hospital in Gent. For online support I was creating e-learning content and screencasts with Camtasia & Captivate, and hosting it on an open source, self-installed Moodle platform.I was fully immersed in the realm of digital health during that period (health 2.0 following the web 2.0 craze) with my own smartnursing website, Twitter account @smartnursing, was a member of the ICT4care group, created the website http://ict4care.be (still online), played a role in organizing conferences, and attended events. I was completely on top of the subject.Starting from 2018-19, the hospital decided to implement a completely new integrated electronic record system, Cerner Millennium, and named it KompAZ. I took on the role of functional analyst and became responsible for the patient records of everyone in the hospital who wasn’t a doctor or pharmacist (physiotherapists, speech therapists, social services, etc.), managing their respective records for all patients. With my nursing background, I also contributed half of my time to the nursing record. I was also involved in the selection of an e-learning solution, searching a solution for a project glossary, and the migration of free-text medical data from the existing record to structured (SNOMED) data in the new patient record.In my spare time kept observing how healthcare is changing, envisioning its future, and searching for ways a nurse, doctor and other health professionals can use technology, social media, AI (in short, "all things digital") to achieve smarter, efficient and high-quality care and foster healthy communities.
