As a Student Research Assistant at Willamette University, I worked with another student to analyze the corporate social responsibility of NextEra Energy and Starbucks, and how it's evolved since the 1990's. By analyzing both companies' annual reports alongside their sustainability ports, we documented the rates at which their products and services adopted a more sustainable supply chain and lifecycle. Examples include Nextera Energy investing millions into solar projects every year in order to make most of their generation capacity based on renewables, while Starbucks invested into sources of coffee that are more environmentally friendly. Lastly, we analyzed how close competitors of these two companies adapted to their example of success through sustainable practices.

At the Hawaii County Mayor's Office, I was put in charge of recording all local/island-wide economic transactions that occurred on the Big Island of Hawaii from 1930 to present day. These recordings varied from daily exchanges from the Hilo Department of Water Supply to Warner Brothers renting a beach. I also sat in on bond-market exchanges as Hilo county looked to fund their next set of projects via the selling of various municipal bonds. Overall, I learned what an island economy's functionality looks like on a local and large scale.

As an intern at the Hawaii Small Business Development Center, I learned how to effectively communicate with future or current business owners to help them understand the best allocation of their assets and resources. After sitting in on meetings with said business owners, I wrote up business plans for them to apply to their weekly, monthly or yearly operations to accomplish their financial goals. I also completed research projects that involved looking into the service and marketing history of local businesses in the Hilo area so as to determine what factors were more likely to determine their success or failure. At the end of the internship, I presented strategies to prepare well-rounded business plans to a room full of individuals hoping to start businesses on the Big Island of Hawaii.
