Reading is Power International Inc. (RIPI) is a Columbia, SC-based, all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation founded in 2000. The mission of RIPI is to provide small libraries of the world's best bilingual and Spanish-language children’s books to communities and families in need. Community libraries are delivered to one-room schoolhouses throughout Central America and include ~200 books. Home bilingual libraries are delivered to local families throughout South Carolina and contain ~20 books.RIPI strives to increase the awareness of communities and families in need. We work closely with local schools to incorporate our program into a service-learning experience for their students. Typically, the work required to create each library is performed by 5th to 8th-grade students as part of their Language Arts or Spanish classes.We are currently providing small bilingual home libraries of developmental, read-aloud, and picture books to the families of preschool children. The goal of this project is to improve the school readiness of Spanish-speaking children ages 3 to 5 while instilling in them a love for reading and books.Bilingual books are chosen so that Spanish-speaking parents and their English-speaking school-age siblings are both able to read aloud to the preschool children in the home. This serves to improve their language skills while strengthening the emotional bonds between the family members. Families to receive the libraries are identified by working with partners from a variety of sources including, Adult ESL programs, preschool children support programs, companies with a largely Spanish-speaking workforce, and local library branches.

The goal of the DRRC is to significantly accelerate the delivery of relief and reduce the time needed for recovery in areas impacted by a disaster. The DRRC is a unique opportunity for citizens to serve their communities in the aftermath of future disasters. DRRC members are activated based on the location of the disaster and the specific disaster response and recovery activities that the State of South Carolina decides to deploy.
