During an extended stay in West Africa in the early 1970's, I learned that I wanted my future to be about helping people with health care issues. I spent over 20 years as a practicing physician, including 14 years as a clinic chief, and was known for excellent patient care and local leadership. Upon becoming a full time leader, my passion related to providing affordable, high quality health care to patients and communities. 15 years of escalating responsibility culminated in my appointment as President and Chief Medical Executive of Group Health Physicians. I led our medical group to excellent outcomes in quality and financial performance, while developing skills in clinical operations, management of large budgets, strategic planning and execution, and driving cultural change.For a decade, I had responsibility for the Group Health Delivery System, caring for 400,000+ patients in 25 primary care and 4 multi-specialty sites. During that time I also heldexecutive roles working on strategy and execution for the $4 billion enterprise. In 2008 I became the President of Group Health Physicians (1200+ clinicians) reporting directly the the Group Health Physicians Board. In 2010, under my leadership, Group Health Physicians received the Acclaim Award from the American Medical Group Association, recognizing GHP as the number one medical group in the country at meeting the 6 critical qualities of the Institute of Medicine (care that is Safe, Timely, Effective, Equitable, Efficient, and Patient-Centered).I have been a guest in the White House, have done quite a lot of writing, and have been featured in numerous journal articles, television programs, and media events related to multiple aspects of my work.I have opened a consulting firm, Soman & Faulkner, LLC. We provide consultation to individual leaders and to leadership teams working to improve their communication, function, and performance, and also on designing and enhancing systems of health care.
