About Michael S. Smith Ii

I am a terrorism analyst and internationally recognized expert on the influence operations of Salafi-Jihadist groups, open source intelligence (OSINT) specialist, and international preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) consultant. In 2016, for my collaboration with anti-ISIS hactivists, Foreign Policy magazine listed me among the “Moguls” in its 100 Leading Global Thinkers, and Fast Company magazine ranked me 14 on its 100 Most Creative People in Business. In 2021, I began conducting PhD research in the Department of War Studies at King's College London that examines OSINT's utilities in counterterrorism. Prior to this, I worked as a lecturer in Johns Hopkins University's MA in Global Security Studies and MS in Intelligence Analysis programs, for which I developed and taught a course focused on the OSINT discipline. As a P/CVE consultant, my recent projects include providing assistive guidance to Bosnia and Herzegovina's Ministry of Security through a USAID/OTI-funded program. My work for members of Congress has been entered into the Congressional Record and used as a source document for national security legislation signed by President Obama, titled The Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act of 2012. In 2017, I provided expert testimony during the United States Senate’s high-profile hearing focused on terrorists’ and Russia’s online influence operations. Earlier in 2017, I presented my research to the Global Coalition to Counter Daesh (ISIS) while serving as the keynote speaker for a Global Coalition practitioners conference hosted at the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s headquarters in London. In 2019, I presented my analysis of how conflict in Syria has shaped international terrorism as a speaker and panelist for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly's 19th annual Parliamentary Transatlantic Forum. My research and perspectives on international security issues have been covered extensively by major media, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, BBC, Foreign Policy, Bloomberg, NPR, Voice of America and Newsweek. I have published with a diverse mix of influential policy and news publications, including Foreign Affairs, Lawfare, The Times of London, CNN.com, FoxNews.com and The Christian Science Monitor. My scholarly work includes the chapter on ISIS in the Routledge Handbook of International Relations in the Middle East (2019). In recognition of my academic accomplishments, I was inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.I am not very active on LinkedIn.CV at TerrorismAnalyst.com
