I often was in charge of designing, engineering and also the final supervision and construction of all kinds of special effects and full size ground effect tasks. This often included suspensions for camera men and camera equipment, the design and construction of stunt cars and various other stunt equipment, real and simulated more safe explosions, bullet hits on stunt men and environment, high pressure air guns to launch all kinds of objects including stunt dummies, animatronic creatures in all sizes, some high rigging on 20 story high buildings and mountain cliffs, car launches, full size airplane- and train crashes. One of my bigger projects was the design of a hydraulic multi axes suspension for a full size passenger airplane with 40 stuntmen on board. This was for the movie “Alive”, where we had to simulate the rough air conditions that happened before the plane lost its tail on a mountain top in the Andes. All stuntmen, coffee cups and loose objects had to fly up and down, sideways, back and forth simultaneously while the plane was vigorously shaken in all directions. It involved three 60 Hp pumps, 2 inch diameter hydraulic lines, 600 gallons of hydraulic fluid and peak pressures up to 2000 PSI. One of my most challenging projects where the design and construction of animatronic piranhas that had to attack and take a bite out of a stuntmen's face, hands and feet while he was vigorously trying to fight them off while being submerged under water. The producer told me, the whole scene turned out so gory that they had to reduce it to a few seconds in the movie in order to allow for a PG 13 rating. This was for the movie "Bird on a Wire".
