About Michael Stehnach, Phd
I am currently a Senior Research Engineer at CyteQuest, where I am helping to develop a new electroporation tool to transform non-viral cell engineering. I find immense satisfaction in designing and fabricating microfluidic devices using photolithography, 3D printing, and CNC milling. Additionally, I enjoy quantifying microscale physical and biological transport phenomena through microscopy, high-speed imaging, and image analysis. My motivation stems from a continuous desire to tackle challenging problems and gain new knowledge.Previously, I was a postdoctoral researcher in Seth Fraden's lab at the Brandeis Bioinspired Soft Materials MRSEC in Waltham, Massachusetts, where I designed and fabricated microfluidic devices to study active matter systems and invented a surface treatment device to generate double emulsion droplets. At Brandeis, I also served as the Director of Microfluidics and as a Science Communication Lab Fellow.During my Ph.D., I worked under the guidance of Prof. Jeff Guasto in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tufts University. My research focused on low Reynolds number hydrodynamics and microscopic biological systems. I combined multiple disciplines—microfluidics, fluid mechanics, biophysics, transport phenomena, and statistical physics—to study the movement of swimming microorganisms in complex, inhomogeneous environments, as well as marine microbial chemotaxis.

Science Communication Lab Fellow
As a fellow, I offer individual coaching, targeted workshops, and a range of initiatives to support the Brandeis scientific community. Specifically, we help clients with the skills they need to communicate the rationale, process and results to any audience in written, spoken or visual form.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
- Invented a novel device to robustly surface-treat PDMS microfluidic devices for double emulsion droplet generation (water-in-oil-in-water) in order to analyze various systems, including single-cell assays, using flow.
- Designing and implementing a modular microfluidic device that supplies a continuous source of energy to various active matter systems using CNC milling, laser cutting, and 3D printing.
- Optimizing a microfluidic device for high-throughput molecular screening to accelerate drug discovery using photolithography and soft lithography techniques.
Director Of Microfluidics
- Responsible for training new students in the fabrication and operation of microfluidic devices.
- Consult with various labs in the design and fabrication of new microfluidic devices as well as troubleshoot existing devices.
- Supervise daily operations including the maintenance of equipment while ensuring the facility is stocked with supplies.
Co-Organizer And Instructor: Introduction To Microfluidics Technology Summer Course
This annual 1-week long summer course was advertised to graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and industrial scientists/engineers interested in utilizing microfluidic technology in their works. In total, participants from the labs in the United States and Europe were introduced to the microfabrication technologies needed to build microfluidic devices. Over.
Graduate Research Assistant - Department Of Mechanical Engineering
- Created a multiplexed microfluidic device which uses serial dilution to simultaneously generate six parallel chemical gradients that span five orders of magnitude in concentration on a single chip, which examined how.
- Discovered a novel reorientation mechanism that dictates microbial transport in viscosity gradients, providing a better understanding of cell motility in complex systems.
- Developed a method to characterize inhomogeneous viscosity profiles using microrheology in conjunction with comprehensive algorithms in MATLAB, particle tracking velocimetry, and microscopy.
- Expert in the design, fabrication, and characterization of microfluidic devices using photolithography and soft lithography techniques in a class 1000 cleanroom.
- Skilled in a range of microscopy techniques including fluorescent, phase contrast, and bright-field.
- Member of a select group given essential worker credentials to the Tufts Micro and Nanofabrication Facility and assisted in the development of safe operating procedures during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Teaching Assistant - Data Science For Sustainability
Peer Mentorship Leader
Merrimack College was awarded a major grant from the National Science Foundation to graduate more engineering and computer science majors. The program consists of assigning a peer mentor to each first year student to help each student learn the "ins and outs" of being an engineering or computer science student. As a Lead Peer Mentor, besides mentoring.
Admissions Student Ambassador
My responsibilities included giving tours to perspective students and represent Merrimack College at different events such as Open Houses and Accepted Students Day.
Summer Bridge Program Mentor
As a part of the grant from the National Science Foundation, there was a two week optional summer program, called the Summer Bridge Program, that provided math review to help with first year engineering and computer science student's math placement. The program introduced students to their prospective major through field trips, invited speakers, hands on.
Mathematics Peer Tutor
My responsibilities included being available to tutor every subject offered at Merrimack College. As a Peer Tutor, students could walk in without an appointment to receive help.
Research And Development Intern
- Throughout my internship at ConMed Corporation, I:
- Created and carried out Design Validation Reports, Study Protocol Reports, and Test Methods.
- Designed custom test fixtures.
- Gathered and correlated engineering data.
- Created change orders to amend product specifications.
- Worked with many departments such as Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Regulatory, Marketing, Packaging, and Incoming Inspection.
