My research revolves around reverse engineering the structure, dynamics and evolutionary history of biological systems. To this end I am developing statistical, mathematical and computational methods, which are then used in order better to understand how such systems operate. I am particularly interested in biomedically important problems, and my research group actively investigates the behaviour of host-pathogen systems, the immune response and stem-cells (especially haematopoietic stem cells, which give rise to all the cells in the blood and the immune system). Ultimately we are interested in developing rational therapeutic interventions which allow us to control the behaviour of such systems.At the more fundamental level I would also like to understand how cellular and molecular systems sense and respond to their environment. They pick up molecular cues from their environment, process them internally, and respond accordingly. Whether the response is appropriate or not may affect the long-term reproductive success of the organism. For this reason it is important to consider the evolutionary context as well.The methodology developed by my group has also applications beyond systems and synthetic biology. I am also interested in social networks and the analysis of dynamical systems more generally.
