A History Atlas Of Saugerties

Saugerties, New York

This is a demonstration project made as a virtual adjunct to a physical fine art project to show the concept of an electronic vector-based directory for mapping placement of locations in a fixed geographic area. The fine art project is a site-specific sculpture and this electronic media fits it into a historic physical and cultural environmental. This is an innovative multimedia interpretive information architecture graphic product supported through a series of blogs with the complete content designed to be installed in individualized computers. It is a compendium of the full history of the area that acts as a promotion for the overall systemic art project that the site-specific sculpture represents. This promotion element is planned to extend into a prototype for a full area promotional vehicle as soon as the locality catches up. That will formalize the concept as a primary information source. Functionally, this project is 100% digital and involved mastery of vector design, PDF development, digital scaling formats, flash, html code and Acrobat pro. My LinkedIn network is planned to connect those that are subscribers and users of my History Atlas of Saugerties with the intent to grow business and professional awareness of the cultural heritage of this community as installations grow. The background and experience this community adds to this professional network will help define Saugerties as a dynamic community continuing its strong heritage of innovation and inventiveness. I relate to all these fellow residents as colleagues in A History Atlas of Saugerties with profiles that represent Saugerties’ character; past, present and future.

2001 - Present ~25 yrs 6 mos

Vice Chair, Historic Preservation Commission

Current
Town Of Saugerties

Saugerties, Ny

I served on the committee that drafted the Town of Saugerties Historic Preservation Ordinance that was enacted into law in 2004 and was appointed as a founding member of the commission formed under that law. During the period of the law’s development I did commentary and mapping with the group creating the Town of Saugerties Cultural Resources Survey that was completed under the commission in 2005. I created a flash-based mapping concept to present content of this survey in 2011 and placed it on the blog http://assetsurvey.blogspot.com. I also developed and published in 2011 guidelines for historic preservation of the town’s eighteenth and early nineteenth century structures for the commission and am continuing to add to this publication guidelines for later periods.

Mar 2004 - Present

Member, Historic District Review Board

Current
Village Of Saugerties

Saugerties, Ny

I was asked to be a member of the Village of Saugerties Historic District Review Board in 2005 to apply my knowledge of the early industrial revolution remains in the village when a historic survey structure was being issued a demolition permit. I have served on the board since. I began to develop and publish in 2011 guidelines for historic preservation as a joint project between the Village and the Town of Saugerties and am currently working on the sections of that which cover the structures unique to the village, including it‘s National Register Main-Partition Historic District. I am currently doing a comprehensive documenting of the industrial mill and tide water transportation developments of the nineteenth century for this historic overlay zoned district as a personal project so this can be submitted for National Register recognition by the Review Board.

Fine Artist

Current
Conceptual Art Project "Knots"

Saugerties, Ny

I created a conceptual art theme in 1967 and had exhibitions of works on this theme at MUSEUM in Manhattan in 1968, the Woodstock Artists Association in 1970 and Marist College in 1971. These works conceptualize an infinite number of individual creations identified from the form of the knots developed in a systemic matrix invented to plot their forms. An animation descriptive of the basic concept is a component of the sidebar of all of my blogs. The blog dedicated to this fine art is http://knotform.blogspot.com where the complete theory for a participatory art form is discussed. A demonstration project begun in 2002 that represents this participation is my Great Knot. This is a three-quarter acre environmental sculpture in the form of a dry-laid bluestone wall made from the rubble of a century-and-a-half old quarry built into the base of a waterfall. Its construction is followed on http://greatknot.blogspot.com. This conceptual art and my History Atlas of Saugerties are interrelated components of a more extensive approach to all my projects, which is a study of the concept of “identity”.

1967 - Present ~59 yrs 6 mos

President, Chief Technology Officer

Diaphragm Stratagraphy, Inc

Saugerties New York

""DiaStrata" was created to commercialize the patents of Michael Sullivan Smith, the inventor and owner of the patents for a new printing process. This business involved testing and research, prototype development, pilot production and a beta business created for proving applications, based on one process and two device patents in the US and filings in Japan and EU patents for Great Britain and Germany. Beta products using the systems and patents were marketed under Sign On To The Spirit, a merchandising subsidiary, over MTV during the 1994 25th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival and afterward at the Baseball Hall of Fame, West Point and the Kennedy Space Center and were also part of the 50th Anniversary of WWII. These products were the subject of a GSA contract for the 50th Anniversary of the Korean War before the business was disbanded in 2001. All operations in this invention-based business were conducted by Michael Sullivan Smith. The invention was a printing device and was designed in the form of a "complete printing business in a box that fit the dimension and weight limitations of a UPS shippable unit". Financial fascination with the dot-com’s destroyed this solid business concept. Functionally, this project required mastery of CAD, pneumatic/electronic hybrid circuitry design, fluids compounding, photo emulsions development, mold design, industrial design, and extreme patience with ignorant financial professionals. This experience is thoroughly documented as the case study http://strataprinter.blogspot.com.
