Michael Syson, or Mike, is the founder of Usbong, a computer services business whose mission is to defeat poverty by uplifting human lives. Most recently, he and his team have focused on the healthcare industry, where they’ve built a Knowledge Management System to assist Orthopedic Surgeons in private clinics and hospitals with accounting, inventory, and patient information retrieval. He then uses time gained from system efficiency to maintain Usbong Balita, a news aggregator service to share know-how from news articles which he has translated mainly into English from Japanese, Spanish and Chinese Mandarin. In addition, he shares sound recordings and YouTube videos of himself to show that continuous, short 5 to 20-minute daily speaking practices on a target language to explain viewed content can help in quickly improving memory of vocabulary and the ability to construct sentences on the fly. Meanwhile, he joins game jams like Game Off to show that after playing and learning about video games as a consumer when he was a child in the 90’s, he can now create games of his own too. He is fond of well-known favorites like Super Mario World and Street Fighter Zero 3. Curiously, he adds Chrono Trigger to this list even if he never played it at the time. He recommends PoyPoy and intends to create a version of his own multiplayer game soon.Previously, he had been teaching Japanese and Chinese Language and Culture at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he was taking his PhD in Computer Science. However, after 5 years, he dropped out after failing the comprehensive exams twice.Mike did finish with a B.Sc. in Computer Science and a Minor in Japanese Studies at the Ateneo de Manila University in March 2007. This was while he was working as a mobile app developer and training with the ping-pong varsity team. In addition, he studied in Japan as an exchange student for two semesters at Kansai Gaidai University, where he received a diploma in Asian Studies. In April 2007, he passed the Philippine National IT Standards - Fundamental Engineer exam. After working in the industry, both locally and in Japan, he proceeded to graduate school as an Engineering Research and Development for Technology government scholar, and completed in 2011 his M.Sc. in Computer Science at the Ateneo de Manila University. In the same year, he and his team also won the Ateneo Socio-Civic Engagement for National Development Awards for the School of Science and Engineering.
